I am getting ready to jump head first into a new project (model A sedan), my first Hot Rod, and need to start collecting the suspension pieces. I was wondering about front and rear axles. Are the Model A and 32 thru 34 front axles the same width? or does it go even later then that. I will be going with a dropped axle but would like to know what I am looking at when searching the swaps.(dimensionally). Also what rear axle width (is it 56, 57 or 58 inch width). I believe the popular choice is the 57-59 ford nine inch. I appreciate the help
The preferred 9 inch is a 57-58-59 Ford passenger car rear, but I like the early 66-72 or so Bronco. Same width but has the old 5 on 5.5 wheel pattern A early V8 Maverick works out real good also and they are 56" wheel flange to wheel flange (2 inches more narrow than a 57-58-59 or Bronco ......which are 58") For the front ..........I have a 48" (kingpin to kingpin) under my Deuce..........but most fellows use a 46 or 47 incher. I have stock 56 F100 wheels and brakes and they sit under the Roadster ......... disc brakes ADD width (plus wheels to clear disc brakes) so that's why most use a 46" axle under a 32 or a Model A. Fenders mean more attention must be paid to the widths..... Hiboys get away with most anything.
IF...........you want to run ole timey steel wheels.......the easiest way is to go Bronco in the rear and F100 56 stuff in the front........stock F100 rims work as is.........
The sedan may require a wider rear axle than a roadster or a coupe, making it easier to find the right one. Perhaps a stock pick up rear end would work quite well. I'd suggest you mock it up first to check what clearance is required, particularly if you're planning to run it low. Good luck, dug
Dunno if this will help, but the 9" rear axle in my 32 highboy is 55" outer drum to outer drum. The rear 4 bars are on the outside of the frame and tires are 285/70R-15 on 10" wheels with 2 7/8" backspacing. The usual rear axle width recommendation for this car is 56". With the right wheels and tires there should be no problem in getting tires inside the fenders. On my 31 on 32 rails, the 9" rear axle is 56". Tires on it are 235/75R-15 on a 6" wheel with approx 3" backspacing. This particular combo has plenty of clearance between tire & rear wheelwell sheet metal. The tire/wheel combo also fits well inside either a 31 fender (narrow) or 29 fender (wide) on the same body. The 29 fenders are about 1" wider than the 31 fenders. It works on the 31 cuz the running board sheet metal apron notch in the fender is cut away for a bobbed fender setup so there's no problem with using either the 29 or 31 fender on the 31 body. If you run aprons and boards you have to use the fender year specific to the car. You can see the difference in this rear shot of the 31. I have some more fenders to bob that will match the wide one that's on the car. Although the narrow one fits the present rear wheel and tire pretty good, but a little more clearance wouldn't hurt.
