quick change 002.JPG quick change 006.JPG quick change 008.JPG I went to put some gears into my quickchange this weekend, and I seem to have a problem.
the lower shaft has a sholder that is keeping the gear from going in far enough.
and the top shaft does not have anything to keep the gear from going forward into the bolts.
top gear goes in too far, and the bottom gear does go in far enough.
has any one else been through this before. see the pictures and please give some advice. quick change 002.JPG quick change 006.JPG quick change 006.JPG

what seabeemc said-alsolooks like the bottom shaft isn't in all the way-notice the space between the snap ring and the bearing in the last picture

My early seventies Halibrand catalog lists that part as a " V8 Gear Spacer " , part number H264, but gives no dimensions.

open drive or torque-tube?on open drive the bolt holding the yoke on is all that keeps the lower shaft from pulling out the back,on closed drive the coupler being pinned to the shaft does it.also the front bearing is NOT flush with the case!!the torque tube has a recess for the bearing,so should the seal plate on an open drive

The catalog lists three lower shafts for the V8 rear end.
There were two six spline / six spline shafts. A short one for sprint car use and a long one designated as " standard ". No dimensions shown to tell which is which. Both of these appear to be meant for enclosed drive / torque tube usage.

The third one was 1 1/8 ten spline on the drive flange end, six spline on the change gear end and was meant for an open drive line conversion package the Halibrand sold.,

Disregard lower shaft information you've received. Hot Rod Works has the spacer you need.
Perhaps gear lube carried your old one out with the gear when removed, look for it. Good luck, Ron

I'm guessing the shaft is hardened but I had to hand file with a small file the splines on the shaft to get the lower gear to slide on all the way.
I would carb clean the splines to clean them and then use a black sharpie and draw on the shaft(white trash dyekem) then slide the gear on to see where I needed to give the splines a little 'love'
Re apply the sharpie and slide the gear on and repeat......A LOT!!! It worked and I have had no issues.

See if you can push that lower shaft in by hand. Might be loose enough in the bearing bore to let it slide out a bit with the gear as you pulled it off. In that case, the cover will hold it in the right location when you put it back together.

  10. Looks like you are hiting the bolts on the top retainer. The spacer will take care of that. Without it you are going to destroy your rear end.
