55 Chevy 283 been sitting under cover for over 25 years. Engine was locked, soaked with Marvel Mystery for a few days and freed up. Ignition was gone through and freshened up. Carb was rebuilt. Oil Changed. Attempted to fire her off and she promptly blew the oil filter seal. Made a big mess. Cleaned shop up. Old filter, canister had been remover and replaced with adapter. Maybe just dried out seal. Replaced filter with Fram PH 13, added new oil again. Fire her up and bam there goes another oil filter seal. another shop clean-up.

This has happened to a friend that bought the car from the family of Modifierdriver after his passing. Any ideas as to what is going on would be helpful?

Pressure spring in oil pump stuck would be my first guess.

I would pull distributor and try priming it first with a drill to see if the pressure spring let's go.

Could be some crud in the oil passages hardened up but I'd still bet on the oil pump spring first.....

There were several different types of spin on adapters. The best ones kept the original bypass valve, and fit over it. Bad ones don't have a bypass valve....and also some have really flaky threaded fittings for the filter to attach too, not long enough.

I'd find the parts to put it back to stock canister type (like I did on my early 396 and my 327), but then, I"m an idiot.

I bought a "like new" but used Melling pump for my sbC in the mid 70's, had that happen, yep stuck spring, blew two filters off before pulling it apart, yes, what a mess it made.

  6. Did you happen to notice your oil pressure when the seal failed? If it was fairly low, say 20 to 40 lbs., I'd look first at the oil filter and/or adapter. If it was stupid high, like 60+ lbs., I'd suspect the oil pump or the pressure regulator valve.

Same thing happened to me with a 350 c.i. v8 that sat for many years, turned out to be the stuck oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

This. I bet you'll find the relief valve in the oil pump is stuck shut. Drop the pan, pull the pump to check.

Just heard from them again today. No bypass valve when they pulled the adaptor. Ordered new adaptor and bypass and will try again after installing. getting tired of cleaning up 4 quarts of oil off the floor each time.
