I want to use my original speedometer in my '54 Customline (who wouldn't?). I have a 4R70W (AODE) transmission and am trying to figure out where to get a speedo cable for this setup. I told the guys I got the ****** from that I wanted to use the original, mechanical one. Their paperwork says "This unit uses an electronic speedometer. The speedometer housing supplied is also capable of using the original equipment speedo cable if needed." Your help is appreciated, a couple of pics of the trans connector....thanks
You have to undo the bolt on the clamp down clip that holds that electronic speedo head in place. Then pull the electronic sensor ***embly out, there is a speedo gear attached to it that is inside the ****** case. The ATP Y-801 speedo cable from the 1967-68 Mustang should be the cable you want. It is approximately 82" in length and the speedo gear from the electronic sensor will fit onto the mustang cable and the mustang cable fits into the transmission case and bolts in where the electronic one was. Hope this helps and works for you. PS Most of this is covered in the FAQ ection here on the sight under speedo cable discussions.

I believe the info Thriftmaster gave is probably correct, although I cannot verify the part numbers. For many years Ford trannies had both mechanical and digital output capabilities out of the single port that the pulse generator is in (shown in the pic). There are pulse generators that also have the cable connection in some older Fords..I can get that info if needed, but unless you're running a cpu in your car that needs the digital info as well you wouldn't need it. Possibly might have to change the cable gear to get the right mph reading.
Thanks Texas57, I think my ****** is step-up for both mechanical and electronic based on the paperwork and conversation I had with the builder. They wanted tire size, rear-end ratio (3.70) , engine etc. Here's what I got from Summit Racing: "Since the housing has the cable hookup on it, you can ust the Lokar cable, LOK-SP1502U. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lok-sp1502u/overview/" And Jegs didn't even pay attention to my question, I have the mechanical hook-up. (I think) "Thank you for giving JEGS the opportunity to ***ist you. The only way I can think of to drive a mechanical speedometer would be to swap the output shaft with one from an earlier trans that has the drive gear. Unless that is supplied as well." Thought hooking up the speedometer was a 'no brainer' till I got into it. And now reading about electric and GPS. Learning about the 'pulse generator' too. And of course I had to get the 4R70W.
I had a conversation with Jeff awhile back and he directed me to another sight specific to AOD and AODE transmissions. (clickclickracing) I have been doing some extensive reading over there and the first generation AODE guts can be pulled out and dropped straight into an AOD transmission. The electronic speedo gear pickup on the first gen AODE ****** is the same as the AOD electronic pickup and still uses the internal speedo gear based on the information I have researched so far. If I am wrong on this some transmission guru will chime in and correct me.
