I have a mild SBC 350 in my 48 Ford Coupe. The mufflers are Flowmaster 40s and they are too loud for me. I have tried two other muffler , a Summit Racing muffler and one other that I can't remember the brand . They all sound about the same....loud. Waht is a good sounding muffler that would be quiter than the 40s? Thanks, John

I don't have a muff recomendation for you but in my experience , a muffler that is further down stream from the engine makes less noise

Trying not to veer too far off-topic here, but wasn't there a Chrysler/Imperial muffler that flowed nearly as well as the Corvair Turbos did? My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I seem to recall they sounded pretty good too.

Yup, those are what "large body turbos" are loosely copied off of.

inside the vehicle noise, or outside?

    where does the exhaust dump/terminate?

if it's under body, specially before the axle, it'll be loud inside no matter what you do.

run the exhaust all the way to the rear of the vehicle, it'll be quieter.

the exhaust on one of my cars ended 2 inches before the rear valance... loud, droning sound inside the car, even with an insulated trunk. extended it 2 inches and the drone disappeared.

Yea, normally the HAMB is all about LOUD mufflers on cars with 3.08 gears, 218 deg hyd cams and 9/1...:D
And no Dave, I dont include you in that....

  22. On my 426 max wedge I run a pair of Chev truck mufflers that were I believe original equipment for single exhaust half tons in the 1980s. The engine breaths well and you can hear the big mill with its raspy voice but it is not overpowering headache producing sound. In fact when cruising with windows rolled up you can not really hear it and yet folks say it sounds nice going by. However it would not conceivably ever get me an unnecessary noise ticket. I would use them again. I am more then happy with them. My muffler guy recommended them and he had stacks of them then. Does the muffler hinder my performance ? I doubt it but if you want to know feel free at any stop light to give me a go. Go ahead son, make my day!

I had the Hushpowers on my 40, hated them. Loud and funny sounding. Tried some ???[oh hell, whatever brand Mario and Chip like] although they were the short ones. Didn't like them, so I tried some stock 2004 Mustang GT mufflers a friend had removed when new. I like them much better. That said, my 53 F100 with SBF has Flowtech Afterburners. Been on there for many years and sound great. Basically turbos.

I used to know a guy who ran mufflers off a GM 366/427 5 ton truck application. Big round cans, 3" in and out. He had them on a pretty radical 550hp small-block with fenderwell headers in a '58 chevy pu, ran them right off the collector, no tailpipes, and they worked good. This was in the seventies, before big high flow mufflers were common from the aftermarket.

I also ran the 3" inlet/outlet truck mufflers on my '74 C-10. Cut the flanges off the headers and ran 3" pipe to the back of the cab, turned the outlets straight up, ran more 3" back to the bumper and installed 45's to turn it down so it didn't blow straight into the bumper. Certainly my greatest moment in exhaust engineering, no bends except the 45 degree turndowns, free mufflers from the school bus garage, the tailpipes ran over the axle with plenty of clearance, not too obnoxious sounding, and breathed quite well.

I've been looking at those electric exhaust cutouts... pricy, but loudness on demand...

Are you running a balance pipe between the pipes (ahead of the mufflers) ? Back in the early 70's I could not get the bark out of a system until I did that. Once I added the balance pipe the sound was a lot mellower using the same mufflers.

  28. I used cheap FM knockoffs ,They are under the seat and is loud in the car. I wrapped them in muffler wrap and it helped inside the car. Outside I used turndowns and put some homemae baffels in the tailpipe 1st. Could be a little quieter inside but I can.t move them back any furthetrt.o
