My 56 Belair with a SBC 350, fenderwell headers, an "H" pipe and Flowmaster 40's sounds fantastic. I believe the "H" pipe makes the difference. My 63 Belair has Magnaflow mufflers which are much louder then the Flowmasters and draws too much attention.
The problem with mufflers is you never really know how they will sound until you install them. By then its too late.

Those who have never used 'Hemi-mufflers' have no idea how much fun it is to have power and a quiet running vehicle. And, from tests I've seen, they have no more back pressure than so-called performance mufflers. The upside of 'quiet' is that you can drive on the fast side, and don't have to continually look over your shoulder to see if the THE MAN is behind you, or worry about getting a 'fix-it' citation, or worse. My last set were on a '57 Chevy Pickup with a 350 Small Block Steve Frekete at Hollywood Machine Shop built for me. It made good power. When I was building the truck, I bought a set from Blair's Speed Shop in Pasadena, and ran them from day one. My pickup was quiet as a hearse and no slouch. No regrets.

"large body turbos" and "Chrysler Imperial" are "Hemi mufflers". All different names for the same thing, just posting this for clarity.

A cross over pipe always seems to help. Flowmaster series 40's are their loudest ones... 50's are quieter and 70's quieter yet

  7. Looks like I'm one of the few, I like glass packs and hate flowmasters or any other turbo style muffler. Too much of a muscle car sound and "tinny"...even when I had muscle cars. I use just regular generic glass packs, porters might be too loud. I was given some turbo tubes, but haven't tried them on anything yet....but I know they're gonna be loud.

like others have said, a balance pipe/H pipe/crossover can also make a big difference, as does mounting mufflers near the rear and making sure the sound coming out of your tailpipes is directed away from the passenger compartment and not bouncing back at you (had dumps by the back tires on one of my cars and couldn't believe the difference a swap to straights made inside the car)

Turbos aren't a "flowmaster style" muffler, and aren't the least bit "tinny". THey generally have a lower, deeper tone than glasspacks
I think you are a bit confused.

I think the Flowmasters have a "tinny" sound also. They sorta remind me of the old "gutted muffler" of the late 40s and early 50s. They were just a hollow chamber the same size and shape as the OEM muffler so as to replace it without having to change the pipes from original configuration. Had a hollow, tinny sound that I hated then, and still dislike in the Flowmasters.
In the late 70s I had a OT GMC 4X4 p'up with sbc that I really liked the sound I got when I installed headers with 2.5" pipe front to rear with glasspacks with 2.5" core also and a 30" body length. Deep tone, and not too loud till you really twisted it hard.
My hiboy has roadster, or sprint car type headers with 3.5" collectors and pipes, and I installed some baffles insde from the company that has a patented design that they call "Spiral Turbo Baffles". They present very little if any back pressure, they are a little louder than I'd like them to be but the tone is very deep and so far "John Law" hasn't complained.
There are some cone shaped baffles that Speedway sells for oval track use that have lots of holes in them that in total area of all the holes is larger than the sq. in. area of the 3.5" collector and fit right behind where the 4 tubes merge into collector. Been considering installing a pair of those.

Flowmaster do have a tinny sound. Flowmasters and turbos are two COMPLETELY different mufflers, they dont even work the same way. Flowmasters and other similar welded "can style' mufflers use a series of internal sheet metal baffles that direct the sound waves into each other, thereby cancelling out much of the sound.
Turbos and glasspacks are absortion style mufflers.

Totally agree. I like that nice rumble!

This is a true statement. I think it has a lot to do with exhaust velocity when it hits the mufflers. To the OP, where in the length of your exhaust are the Flowmaster 40s you have now mounted?

I used to have a 57 Bel Air with a 283 that I put******* long tubes on, then had Flowmaster 40s welded to the reducers right off a 3" collector. Holy Hell that car was loud, and the Flowmasters would even pop and crack like glasspacks. Then I had to add a trans crossmember when I put a TH350 in, and the Flowmasters got moved to the back in front of the rear axle, totally quieted the car down.

  18. OE Chrysler product Hemi mufflers from the middle 60's application, GTX and Coronet cars.
Recognizable by the 6"dent in the forward section to clear the driveshaft. 2 1/4 in and out diameter.
    Very quiet and mellow.
Maramount was the company last (re)producing back in the 80's and 90's.
Maybe someone into Hemi cars can tell us who handles them now.

  19. I should re phrase that sentence. The flowmasters are tinny, the turbos do sound different but not like glass packs. The turbo rumble doesn't sound quite right with a flathead, just my .02.
