Need to ship a 55 Starchief in the near(hopefully) future.Shipping it from Riverside, CA to Austin Tx. I have used a few shipping companies in the past but payed over $1,000.00 each time. Anyone know of a cheaper, reliable company? Anyone going my way in the next few months with an empty trailer?
It cost me $1200 last year to ship a car from Tupelo Mississippi to Los Angeles, then it cost me $1500 to ship it from Los Angeles to Sydney Australia..... I don't know how that works, but I am about to do it again, I guess we don't learn.
LOL, I guess not. I would tow it myself, but I am already towing the Mrs. car with my truck. The problem I am finding is that to rent a flatbed to go 1500 miles is almost the same as a moving truck because it is one way. Cant I just FedEx it?
Yea, Ive seen some pretty sad pix. Ever see the one of some Olds( I think) being delivered to a dealership from the factory in 1955? The trailer was too high and the bridge was too low and took all the roofs off....oops!
Make sure the place you go to is insured and will insure your car. One of the places I contacted told me that they only cover half of the damages if there are any and that is ONLY when it is on the truck. So, hypothetically, if my car was crushed by a snowplow and it was in one of their storage stops on the way, they expected MY Comprehensive to cover it. I told them to get bent. I went with another company. It was about a grand to get the car from New Hampshire to Tempe AZ. Check on this site http://www.movecars.com/toc/find/index.htm Most of the places listed have free instant quotes. I only made it to AAA autotransport, before I decided. They did a good job, but someone in Massachusetts screwed me, when they couldn't start my car because of the anti theft device, they never bothered calling me for about 2 weeks. So, when I was expecting it to show up, they hadn't even loaded it yet.
Gotta be carefull. A guy my brother-in-law works with bought an old car through an e-bay auction recently and paid to have it shipped here to Michigan. Over a month went by with the shipping company giving him the run-around before they finally admitted that they've "lost" the car and have no idea where it is! He has hired a lawyer and is in the process of sueing the shipping company for the cost of the car, the shipping, and whatever else he can get! I don't know the name of the company involved, but I can find out to help you all avoid the same thing, hopefully!
I missed that pic, but I have seen others...We had a couple cars donated by GM to our autobody class in high school that were "shaved" a little off the top by bridges...they can't sell them, they either have to be scrapped or donated to a cause. We had a brand new (then) 1989 Chevy full size extended cab 2500 that had it's roof knocked in by something low...a brand new, useless, $30,000 truck. Shame.
Reliable Carriers is local to us here Hack...they are in Canton...they also have depots in Fla. and (I think) Cali. They have some of the nicest looking trucks I've ever seen. I had to make some deliveries there a couple times when I worked for NAPA as a driver, they always had a BIG facility and expensixe cars lurking about. No doubt a first rate company.
Does it run? Seems to me if it runs it would be cheaper for the buyer to fly out here and drive it home wouldn't it? Tht would be a plane ticket, gas and maybe a couple of Super 8 rents.
Ask Schnider and Covenant Transport Trucking co. for a back hall rate. you may get it moves for fuel expence Covenant transport has a Terminal in Pomona Ca /Hope this helps/TwistedC
I should of mentioned this earlier, but I am not selling it, but actually moving. Movers are taking all the crap in the house and garage except the car. The wife, kid and I are driving in the truck towing the stupid car (wifes). Thanks for the advise, I will look into some of the names given here. thanks again HAMBERS!
I think DrJ has the right idea. My buddy just hauled a loaded trailer with his Explorer (dangerous!) to Abilene from here and made it in a day and a half. Hell, he even had to cut back to 30 quite a bit to keep the trailer from wagging the Explorer. You could chug coffee and make it in under a full day. Fly back or hop the Greyhound for next to nothing. Chris
I will try to remember to find the info... Or you can do a search on here... I posted it not too long ago... My buddy ships cars monthly if not weekly sometimes... under $1000 for sure...!!!
Kustom55 - Glad to hear you are moving to this area. I've bought a few cars for the LA area and had them shipped to Austin for $500-$600. I use a fella by the name of George Marshal. He is a car guy and has taken very good care of every car he has done for me and the cars of people I have recommended. I know fuel costs have gone up, but I know he was cheaper than anyone else I could find. if you are intrested, email me at rrhill@attglobal.net and I will send you his number. Reggie
it's not any of my buisiness, but seems to me that if the mrs. drove her car, you could tow yours and save a grand. i see people on e-bay advertise shipping from time to time. and then you could spend that grand on the car when you get to texas.
LOL, I wish she could. The Mrs. isnt the best driver around and she would have a nervous breakdown drivin thru 4 states!
Reliable Movers brought the Goldenrod out from Cali. Exotica and Steve's Caddy were coming back from Peterson, so they may have gotten a package deal. Check out the pics under "Events" and "Golden Rod Arives in Texas". http://www.kontinentals.com/About.htm I would spend a little extra $$$ to use someone that has been referred. I had my coupe shipped from Md. when I bought it. It took 3 weeks, including 2 days to come from Waco. Waco is about and hour away. When I got it, the shifter linkage was loose and it wouldn't idle right. Think somebody went cruising in Waco? Prolly racing Bass!
I sold an Olds Toronado to a fellow in Sutten Valence near London. He had Horseless Carriage pick up the car at my home. I was very impressed with the quality of the driver and the way he handled the pick up, documentation, and loading of the car. I was, also, immpressed with the equipment. It cost John about 1250.00 to get it delivered from my house here near Joplin, mo. to New Jersey. About another 1200.00 to get it boated to England
Well, if the Mrs. won't drive it, find an unemployed friend and have him drive her car with the 55 on the trailer. Pay all his expenses, food, hotels, gas, and airfare back. Have him stay with you a couple days to sightsee Austin. Cheaper than $1000. BTW, I did just above when I moved from San Antonio, TX to Livermore, CA. I had a friend drive my 37 Chevy truck with me in my Riviera when I came out to start the new job before I moved my house stuff. I paid for all his expenses and it worked out for both of us. He saw some new country and I was able to get (some of) my cars moved. BTW, Southwest Airlines is the best for the one-way ticket.
