Does anybody have a torque spec for the big nut that holds the driveshaft yoke on a open drive banjo rear ('42-'47)? The yoke has a taper and a single key, similar to the rear axles. Do you install the yoke dry in order to transmit the maximum torque? thanks!
yes install it dry, Its best to lap the two surfaces if they show any galling or wear. use some valve grinding paste and take the key out, then work the yoke on the shaft by hand back and forth till you get an even contact patch. As for the torque setting, I cant find a spec for it in my books, but i would hazard a guess at 130-150 ft lbs. If the surfaces are true and good, it will lock on damn tight at that torque setting, believe me.
As far as I can tell, there isn't a spec for that in the service bulletins. For key and taper I would guess that Lowsquire is right, perhaps on low side. Looks to me like all the published specs I have here are for '49 F1 type or heavies...as with other earlies, only torque spec for your s is pinion prload @ 12-16 inch pounds, totally unrelated to current need. Probably dealer spec was tighten til your eyes protrude.
