I just got my 1960 Fairlane 500 back from the trans shop. It has a new Torque Conv. and rebuilt trans. I also put a rebuilt motorcraft 2100 2 barrel carb from napa on it. The heads have been redone recently also according to the previous owner of the car. It is a 292 y-block. Now for the issue. When it is cold it idles fine and when I put the car in gear no problem. After it has warmed up to running temps it will stall when put in gear. It also had very little power from a stop. I'm not expecting much but this doesn't feel right. Very slow. Where do I start? I have too much invested at this point. Where should the timing be set? Fast idle screw? Idle adjust screws? vacuum leak? I can get it close but it still stalls. I cant handle the stress of sitting in the way of traffic any more. I don't think the gas is boiling or it wouldn't sit and idle for so long.

    Nothing???

I'm not looking to win any races with the thing but I would like to be able to drive it to a shop or someone that knows what they are doing. Kinda hard to get people out to my house for some reason. Right now it doesn't go 2' without stalling. I don't wan't to screw up my new carb. Should I be checking for vacuum leaks or something first?

That's ALWAYS a good place to start, and it's quick and easy too...

idle mixture screw all in, then out 1 1/2 turns then use a vacuum gauge on manifold vacuum to set timing and throttle to highest vacuum at like 850 rpms.

use of a vacuum gauge can help with driveability problems and if there is a small leak it will show up as a wobbly needle.

    usually.

Might just have to speed up the hot idle

The hot idle screw is all the way in. I don't have a vacuum gauge but I'll pick one up tomorrow.
