Mild or NONE. And cutting the fins off a Caddy!??! Just buy a fuckin old Chevy and be done with it and leave the car to someone who appreciates a Caddy for what it is.

Ever seen how the Japanese fishermen gather all the shark fins for their famed and revered shark fin soup? They hook a shark, bring it on the boat, hack ALL of it's fins off and throw its still living and wriggling carcass back in the water. Know what happens then? It dies. Just like a Caddy with its fins cut off would.

    Please. Don't. :(

well, i should not have phrased it: "chop the fins off my Cad."
The '55 has a small bump for the tail lights.
I want to smooth that bump by lowering the tail lights so the lines of the rear quarter matches the trunk line and roof line.

  5. I like the mild chop just to clean up the profile, but if you're gonna cut the fins off I agree with Gigantor just buy a lowly Chevy. If you're not careful the profile you'll end up with is a Packard Patrician, guess why they went tits up?

Exactly! Mild and subtle will better, I think.

And trim the fins if you want. The car looks good with them, and very well may look good trimmed down to match the roof.

Bones Noteboom built one years ago for his wife with the fins cut off. Don't remember the exact year but it never completely looked right to me. I'll see if I have any pics of it.

I like the 1.5 in the back only chop, definately would make the roof line flow better. Improving it, not radically changing it for the sake of change. I dont think those funky bumps hardly qualify as true fins and as someone else already said they look like an afterthought. However, it does look like it might be tough to make it flow good if you cut them off. Of course they dont flow as it is..... You might want to get someone to photoshop them off and do a few versions of what might be done once they are cut off.

I would consider myself a purist when it comes to altering the original Cadillac design....but I would really be interested in seeing that rear window/roof treatment that you mentioned....I think it might actually improve the roof line a lot.

Please don't cut the bump fins though...that would look terrible.

I like everything about this one...aside from the "notch" where the glass meets the top. What happened there? What's the backlight from, anyway? The amount of the chop is right on, and it looks good with the chrome/stainless left on.

If you have to chop it, I would do the front too.. Just doesn't look right to me sloping like that..

Caddy = Fins. They are absolutely gratuitous and completely useless, but that's kind of of the point and one of their many charms. You're not building a hot rod where form follows function. Some of the best things that make a custom are the absolutely unessential elements that just "look" good
A Caddy like that without fins is kind of like seeing a boob without a nipple. Creepy.

IMO, I would lower the car and drive the shit out of it. I think that caddy's have a very classy look as is and they really don't need to be messed with. If anything lower it and don't thiunk about the chop for awhile, do some kustom caddy research and then go to work but if it was me I wouldn't touch that roof.not every car needs to be chopped IMO.

Well since you did ask, I think chopping it only in the rear looks horrible in your photochop (pic #3 anyway". I'm glad you posted this because I've thought about the same thing. The factory top appears taller in the rear because of the window opening.
I've wanted to do a mild chop on my car but I think cutting an inch and a half out of the front and two int rear would be about right. IMO.
My opinion would be to get the car MUCH lower if you going to chop it. The hard top lid has a lower profile stock so the proportions look bad if it's not SLAMMED.

I do not want to chop the front, and chop the rear only 1.5" so there's a very slight slope (see picture where i taped the stainless in its new potential position).
Then lean the rear glass to get rid of that big crown at the rear of the roof, giving the roof line a better slope.
    What do you think?

    ----------------------------
I might be pointing out the obvious, but the way you dropped your stainless down in the pic will not be the final product. You still have it basically at the same point in front and rear as it was from the factory, essentially creating a dip in the roofline. To reuse that stainless you will have to cut a section out of the slanted rear portion to shorten it up just like the roofline. You'll need to be able to tig that stainless back together after the cut, grind it smooth, and finish the metal work to hide the repair. Or make a cover piece to put over the cut-line.
I like suttle changes like you are suggesting as long as they make the car look better.

I just noticed your pic of the taped fin and wood block. Not trying to discourage you but if you do this I think you need to follow the same contour as the trunk. In your pic the opposing angles work against each other.

If you really want to go custom I'd lose those rear bumpers and to keep them from cluttering up the garage you could keep 'em at my house!!! kidding of course
