The truck i picked up at Iola didn't come with a title. Does anyone have any experience trying to get a title in Wisconsin? I've been searching the HAMB and the DMV website but haven't been able to find any reasonable way of getting a title. I have a bill of sale and should be able to get a serial number off the engine as the frame number has rust pits over part of it. The truck has a Minnesota tag on it from '69. Would i have to track down the last person who titled it and get them to file for a replacement title (it's changed hands a few times)? What if they're dead? Can i get a "reconstructed" title without having to meet current emissions and saftey standards? It seems like the more i read the more confused i get. Can anyone shed some light on this for me:confused:

Man, I got the same dillemma. I've went to two different DMV's and its the same old shit "what no title?" "it's up to the original owner to get one to you" etc.etc. I just hate to drop big bucks on buying a title although that is what my dad did for his Model T and it worked. May just have to bite the bullett.

Actually having a license plate is a bonus for MN DMV. We could take the serial #, the plate #, and a written statement from the guy you got it from to the DMV and walk out with plates. You'll have to bond the car for three years(cost about $200), but it's doable in MN.

  4. I hope Wis. is better than MN , they just tightened up the registration process here making it nearly impossible to retitle. Bonding is now a waiste of time and money ,but may still work there, this was a big topic of discussion at last weekends cruise here, they now require the former owner to be brought IN PERSON at the reg office  , photo's of all old car title applications and predetermined valuation of all so called "collector cars" , rumor has it that they bringing in on site visual VIN verification as well ,this means you have to bring your car in on a trailer to have them SEE the VIN on the car as orig.,they will inspect the car at that time as well to make sure it meets all current DOT requirements , this means it has to at least LEGAL to drive :( , so a junk yard dog would have to be partially restored to even apply, not a good idea on a car you are just applying for and may get turned down  .The project car market here just took a major hit, basically they are now nothing but parts cars. a LOT of car people are PISSED   :( . Most guys here do not even know about it yet as there was no kind of notice and the local DOT offices are all messed up w the confusing details. One guy said it was Boyd C fallout from the publicity his bust got.don't know, but i think i need to MOVE. Supposedly this just came through on the last Leg. session when these dummy's could'nt pass some state funding bills and the state shut down financially.

There was a thread on this just a day or two ago .
    One more time,
I purchased a title from Titles Unlimited from Las Vegas about 6 months ago .
Download the form from their website, you basically sell it to them, have the form notorized and send it with $125. They return you a bill of sale / registration from a state that does not have titles for old cars and you take it up to your courthouse and get a title in your name.
CAUTION, they were much slower than they had promised, but they did come thru.

    Best of luck.

  6. BIG word of caution on any title company for you in MN. MN state will NOT accept a car/title from any nontitle state w/o a LOT of paper trailing + work, Most of these title company's will tell you this up front that they cannot help MN guys.
No matter where you are, DO your homework BEFORE you buy the car ! one way to get it done is to get tight with a towing company or junk yard they can do it w a "Mechanics Lean".

My buddy just saved all his receipts when he built his roadster pickup and had a state trouper come to his house and issued him a new vin # and titled it as a hobbiest in Wisc. Make sure you have working e brake, mirror, and wiper on it before you call them up.

I have always wondered if a guy could get a title by saying a car was stored on his property for over 30 days with no payment?
Or maybe you just installed a motor in John`s car and never received a payment?
I got a car thats been sitting since 1967. I know the dmv would just laugh if I ask for a title. What do you guys think? anyone ever tried these angles? A friend of mine that works at goodyear said you can file for a mechanics lein? Does that mean I get a title? They have never had to do it.

  11. You may try getting a buddy in a title service friendly state to use a title service, get the title in his name then hand it over to you. Just a thot...

just posting here so I can find this page easily later, some really good info here, need a title for my '64 Olds. I'm not above buying a parts car with a title and using the title-tag from it to register a car. Sure it's in the grey area of legality, but if the gov't is going to be a douchebag about titling old cars, I'm willing to step over that line.

  13. in the early 90's, we gathered a group of dedicated "modified vehicle enthusiasts" and with the support of the majority of Wisconsin "modified vehicle enthusiasts", we rewrote the requirements for "titling and licensing modified or replica vehicles". This was landmark legislation that was passed thru the Wisconsin legislature, approved and signed into law by the governor. Our legislation was adopted by SEMA as "model legislation" and presented to the federal government as "model legislation" for other States to adopt. Occassionally, you will read in various auto related publications that some State has adopted "SEMA styled legislation" regarding rods and customs, it is all one and the same.

BJR GAVE YOU THE CORRECT INFORMATION!!!

If, you want some basic info on how to deal with the Wis DOT, before you contact them, I will take whatever time you need to discuss this. I will PM you my phone #.

This gives me the opportunity to thank all the people that supported our efforts, in the early 90's, and remind all those people that are benefitting from those efforts that, all that you enjoy just wasn't there for you, waiting for you. The people that "talked the talk and walked the walk" to battle negative laws and legislation should be some of your icons or heroes, also.

Right on, man. I had the pleasure of meeting the guy who wrote the Vehicle Collector law that states that old cars can be stored on a property unregistered as long as they are out of the view of the public. We tend to glorify some of the guys that build these wild creations but never give credit to the guys who fight for our right to do it. A big thanks from me and the rest of the HAMB'ers who benefit from your legislative work.

  15. I had the pleasure to see OG 001 (Curt) in action and attended several meetings back then and OG 001 is a HERO because he headed up the Modified Vehicle Enthusiast Group and had gathered up some heavy hitters to rewrite the laws!!!!!!!!

If it weren't for his and others efforts we couldn't drive our own cars that were modified in any way shape or form..., and older cars would have to conform to new car standards just to be licensed for road use...!

    Thanks Curt..!!!!!!!

My '33 pickup was originally re-titled by the previous owner in Wisconsin and sold as a reconstructed vehicle into South Dakota. It was licensed there as reconstructed, also. No problem. Moved it to Iowa and the DOT cal it a salvage title here. That requires the DOT inspector to verify the Wisconsin replacement VIN tag. She does it all the time, so, I made an appointment and she couldn't find it. Apparently, it got removed doing the paint. So, a bunch of paperwork and a few threats to the slow-movers in the capitol and I have a bonded title for three years. She came back out and stuck the new sticker on for me. Local people were super, the far-away ones weren't doing their job, but it was worth the hassle.
