My Australian niece has just married a DC guy who has his Dads 50s jag that had a 440 GTO big block in it. The motor has been out on a stand for 20 ish years. Is there any recommendation for an engine builder in DC. Not looking for a race engine but a reliable build? An estimate of what is the likely cost range would be a help also: Thanks Brendan (Australia)
...If you could post this on the Virginia HAMB Social group as well as the Maryland Social group you might have better luck.

Those are good cylinder heads, one of the better casting numbers. They might need slightly dished pistons to run on todays gas though. l If it came out of a GTO it’s likely a 400, but it could be a transplanted 428 too. With the timing cover having been painted a non-Pontiac dark blue it makes me wonder if the engine hasn’t already been rebuilt at some point in it’s life. Hope it turns out well, Pontiac’s make great torque and are wonderful street engines.

Are they in D.C. proper or one of the suburbs? The D.C. area takes in a large chunk of ground, including, as mentioned above, parts of Maryland and Virginia.

I'd call Burtonsville Machine shop @ 301 490 3131. Bub Whitacre is the owner and has a number of Record holding Small Block Mopars from his shop. Back in the late 70's, early 80's 2 of my room mates worked for Bub. One was running a SS/L car with a 283. First day at the track they were a 1/10th under the national index. I've lost track of Bub for 30 years, but it's only been a few years ago that I heard he was building some of the fastest Stock Eliminator Engines out there. He does build stock engines too, not just race engines.
