Took the 55 sunliner put to get some stuff at the store and it needed gas, when I went to start not even a click so I put it in neutral and it fired up so off to the store. After I got there I tried to start and nothing again in P so back down to N and this time it would barely turn over the engine,it started hard when I came back out but started so home I went. By the time I got home it was starting in park and could not get the starter to do that again so is there any way a neutral safely switch could keep enough voltage to properly activate a solenoid so a starter will turn over slow.
generally if there is a big voltage drop in the circuit that goes from the ign switch through the NSS to the solenoid, it will result in the solenoid not doing anything. There's probably some other reason it was cranking slow. but it's pretty hard to say, without doing some testing while it's acting up.
It has a late 70s switch that bolts to the trans so it will start in P but its strange that while it did not start in P it done that and now its fine, its a used starter and the battery is old so I will be sending a starter to be rebuilt locally and getting a new battery.
Be sure to check that the switch is closing when in Park and neutral with your ohm meter. Wiggle the shift level in each position to see if that affects the circuit continuity. That's the long way if saying, is the switch adjusted properly?
Sounds like the switch that is used on a C-4. I'd make sure that the screws/bolts that hold it in place are tight before I did too much. The Battery you can have tested. They tend to crap out not long after sitting for a length of time though if they were a bit on the iffy side to begin with. Starter is your call but only you know how it was acting before.
If you have a battery tender, you might be able to trickle charge it to bring it back. I've had some luck doing this in the past.
It used to only start in N but not now,put a meter on the battety and it rests at 12.7 volts so.its still holding charge but need to do a load test. Starter is one off a parts car and installed when the rebuilt one took a crap a couple years ago and will check the switch ahen I replace the starter and did put a trans in this winter so I could have left it loose.
Almost 10 year old battery ( 6-11) passed a load test,it would sometimes just start give a hint of starting slow but only after it sat awhile and not hot so I presumed it was the battery since its way passed a normal life span but going to try a starter first.
Had a starter rebuilt locally and while I was at it checked the switch and my dumb ass left it loose so its adjusted,I think it might have been mostly the old battery so it will get replaced this weekend or next week.
Are you still running on 6 volts? I've heard the farm supply stores carry 6 volt batteries as used in tractors. Just a thought.
New battery installed tonight and I think it was most of the problem, probably did not need the starter but its good to know I have a good one and a excuse to use a local rebuilder for the first time. No more parts store starters and alternators.
Had it out today and no start in park so switch is going bad and might not do anything until it will not start in N then worry,I have a screw driver on board so nothing to worry about.
