Technical Never too old to learn something!

  1. Back in 1973, I witnessed an engine fire up close, and it was a scary incident. I was doing a cross training course onto the 747 at Boeing, and we were staying in a hotel in downtown Seattle.
We were wandering back to the hotel after having lunch, (our training in the simulator always took place in the evening), and I happened to see smoke emanating from under the hood while the car was driving up the hill. Within seconds, the front of the car erupted into flame, and the fire was visible on all sides of the front of the car.
The driver got out of the car, but the cars on either side of the car on fire had to scramble to get out of the way, or they would have been burned as well. The Seattle Fire Department got there in a matter of minutes, and made quick work of the fire, but the car was beyond saving. The irony of the situation was, that it was a relatively new car, and it was a surprise to me that something like that would happen to a car that should not have experienced this kind of problem.
The heat from the fire, actually burned the asphalt, which required closing that lane.
I have seen worse fires, but this one had the greatest effect on me, because it happened so quickly, and the driver had to scramble for his life.
