Just what the ***le says... Is anybody out there doing a late 50's to early 60's style RADICAL Custom? Not mild or even full so much, but all out, radical, points style custom.

Post pics of your build here!

I'm talking Customs in the style of the Bob Crespo 40 Ford, the Busonic, the Kopper Kart, The Aztek, the El Capitola The X-Sonic, the Golden Sahara, Jim Doyle's 1952 Mercury ect

    Kustom777 I know you're out there!! haha

I'll start. It's along way off but here is my 53 chevy.

Mods include (and will include) chop top, 51 Ford rear window, 56 Olds headlights, 57 Olds grille with 58 buick grille insert, 57 Olds grille surround and fender lips, hood similar to the La Jolla Chevy, 57 Olds side trim modified, sunk custom built rippled lakes pipes, extended quarters, upside down Lee 56 chevy taillights sunk in, full length turnpike cruiser fender skirts with scoops built into the front, 55 Pontiac rear bumper, Sectioned decklid, 55 Desoto dash heavily modified, 53 caddy sterring wheel. custom frame and suspension and low all the time! The paint is a custom maroon with a heavy metalic and pearl with a cream 2 tone. I'm still a long way off.

Yeah....I tried a post like this awhile back, got about 20 responses...but, you are better known here than I am, so you may have better luck. I hope u do, that's my favorite era (although I was born way to late for it)

Yeah I hope so. It's a great time in custom history that I believe is overlooked.

late 50s/early 60s is my favorite era for customs. I'm doing my shoebox as a late 50s style custom but havent touched it in a few months. Ill continue working on it this winter.

Most cars are done in this style. Hardly anyone does them in the early style. Nothing wrong with either, but the later style is most common, probably why not many responses.

Really??!! What planet are you living on. I don't see very many at all built in the late style. almost all customs I see being built are in the pre 55 style.

Here are the pics to go along with the list I have in the first post.

I think one thing that stops folks from going full on is the lack of raw material i.e. parts to make a Kustom. It can take awhile to locate the parts needed to get a project underway. Today the easy way our is to nose, deck, shave, de chrome, paint it, bag it, chrome wheel or caddy cap call it a Kustom route. Dont get me wrong I dig mild Kustoms, but yeah it takes stones to go Semi Kustom these days

I live on the planet where no one builds early customs except for the Choppers, and Shifters and a few others. Everyone builds them with packard taillights, lakes pipes, canted headlights, peaked this and that, scalloped paint jobs, metal flake....you know all the stuff done to e v e r y 48 and up "custom" out there. FYI you should have stated you want pictures of wild customs, your ***le is too broad and includes the mild customs that MOST people are building.

I love your truck, KF! No reason to change a thing.
But if you're not through playing with it, a grille something like this one Barris did for Johnny Zupan would certainly nail the early sixties look!

I'm building a 54 PU that way, but I don't want anyone to see what I'm doing. A very select few have seen it because I trust they won't give my ideas to those with deeper pockets and more time. I'm pretty proud of the direction, but it's gonna be some time before it gets done.

All too many of the late 50's early 60's customs were built with the ISCA judging sheet tacked up on the shop wall and the quest for changes to garner points was more important than esthetics or the overall beauty of the end product. x points for this modification and ** points for the extended tail fins plus x points for the scoops added above the head lights along with ** points for the extended peaks above the headlights and then add in the grill mods and rolled front pan for more points.

If they got word that someone else in the cl*** was doing a mod that gave x points they in turn added another mod that could get ** points. It was all about the possible points and not all about having the slickest best looking car.

Well said. While a lot of the cars built were just awful there were still quite a few that were breathtaking. The Golden Sahara comes to mind. I love this era of radical customs.

**** brother, still gatherin parts. Worry not, some of the more gratuitous mods will be done, but there's a few things that are almost too easy that I can't believe they weren't done before. I don't care if I'm 60 when it's done. This was inspired when I was like 13-14yrs old. In the last days of my dear Mom being around, she said I need to try and build something I always wanted to build instead of doing it for others all the time. To that end I still buy the occasional lottery ticket, otherwise I gotta earn or get nuthin at all!

Come on man!! Spill it. Now you have me wondering.

  28. dont worry some of us know what your talking about mate.
in australia its even rarer than rare that anyone even contemplates anything even remotely like kustomizing... especialy 60's

id like to go a bit more radical but thats a very hard thing to do on a tbird... its best to use something a bit uglier.... like my 1965 holden panelvan where ive done silly things like front guards upside down on the rear, quad canted headlamps etc etc... sorry its in storage atm so no pics for now.

so ive only just started the kustom work on my bird last week with a totally redesigned hoodscoop, lengthened the hood to cover the eyebrows and shaved the embelems... lots more little tricks to come over the next couple months, like moulded and recessed into the rocker showpipes, lengthened fins, twin frenched ariels (with a twist) blah blah blah.
