Does that mean those $400 epay pairs of 32 plates are now basically worthless?

In California, Didn't you need a pair of antique plates to get registration?

I thought (and I am a foreigner) that acquiring a matching pair of plates insured that the DMV would grant you registration?

So now you just need to pick a number and/or one is supplied for you?????????

Dang me! I shoulda sold off the pairs of 31 and 32 Cal plates while I had the chance.:(

    From the DMV website:

Legislation introduced the California Legacy License Plate program offering vehicle owners the opportunity to purchase replicas of California license plates similar to those issued in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's. The program requires a minimum of 7,500 pre-paid applications prior to January 1, 2015.

Legacy License plates can be ordered for any year model automobile, commercial vehicle, motorcycle, or trailer. The Legacy License Plate Program will not replace the current Year of Manufacture (YOM) license plate program.

The DMV is accepting pre-orders until January 1, 2015. A pre-order form California Legacy License Plate Pre-Order Form (REG 17L) (PDF) is available for these plates. The completed form and $50 payment must be mailed to the address provided on the form. Payment can only be made by check, money order, or cashier’s check made payable to Department of Motor Vehicles. Pre-orders will NOT be processed at DMV Field offices or Auto Club offices.

No, the program does not go back that far. The 32 plates are still expensive.

  6. It's for '56 and newer plates....... and lame.

$50 for issue and $40 a year PLUS regular registration and most likely will be reflective to me current laws. The good thing is that they shouldn't have 6 digits like REAL old plates and I believe they won't have the '56, '63 stamped into them.

The part of the CA law that I can't understand is the requirement that the plates not only be original, unrestored and a matching pair, but they could never have been issued to be "cleared"? Is this correct?

  10. It's a program designed to allow posers to put old plates on a Prius. Not the least bit interesting to me.
The plates will - unlike old plates - be reflectorized, and I would imagine that DMV will use the current 7-place dies to make what were originally 6-place plates. They just won't turn me on. I'll use year of manufacture plates.

Hbwoody no problem.....you i knew theres going to be alot of people out there that my not like this idea but for those that may not be able to get there hands on a pair of vintage plates this is a good idea

  14. For the YOM program is original material (steel or aluminum), a pair (except for '45/'46 only one was issued) and clear meaning the numbers not be in use currently (motorcycles, commercial vehicles and government use the same configuration sometimes as California started re-issuing numbers). The unrestored part really differs from one DMV office to another .

The new plates will either be regular 7 digit or personalized.

Just to make sure everyone knows, the YOM program will still be around this is just an addition.

  15. This is lame and all the posers goldchainers will love it.They could get new vintage looking plates for their 2011 muscle car.Just a way for the state to get more money out of old car people.

eh i think it is not a totally bad idea, like i have only one plate that is presentable for my 53 and i lied to the dmv and told them i have two for it that are readable.

Not a bad idea for those who have only one plate. But like JeffSled said, now it wont be as cool to stand out with your original plates.

It's voluntary. No reason to think of it as lame. It's all good. Neat to see California doing something for us hot rodders. :)

These just kind of seem like the caddy valvecovers on a SBC type deal.Just what I think.

It's gonna annoy the **** outta me to see some PT Cruiser with the "wood" shelf paper on the sides and yellow California plates on it with the clueless owner thinking his car looks like a "cl***ic".

I've got commercial black plates on my '55 truck and though I'd love to have the earlier yellow plates I'd DEFINITELY not consider using these phonies.

Will the new plates have embossed letters/number or will they be flat like some states are doing?

i dont think its a bad idea.
i've seen guys here in CA driving around with repainted current plates to look like vintage ones for awhile.

maybe if you find one old plate for $5 you can order a personalized set to match it. then you'd have three. use the orig on the back, throw the new front in the trunk and you're legal. hang the other new one in your garage.

or pay $300 for a matching clear pair, and use the YOM program.

or pay a good license plate restorer to make you a new old one for $300. and do the YOM program.

    thats the word, "pay'

welcome to hot rodding in CA. nothing is cheap here.

You may wait up to 2 years to get them. Program (if implemented) will not start until January 2015 unless 7500 orders are received prior to that.

    They will be reflectorized.

They will not have the old font that was used on say, a 1930 plate.

They will not have the shape of say, a 1930 plate.

Just some info. FWIW, I think it is a good option.

For a 50's car or later, the above is probably not a big deal.

I am guessing that you will pay the "personalized plate" fee every year if you order a plate that has a special series of numbers or letters. I cannot see any info on that on DMV website (not saying that is a bad thing). Maybe someone knows and can post here.

This program if implemented gives the car enthusiast another option its that simple!
I am responsible for the Y.O.M plate legislation in California. It took over 3 years to get it signed into law. Unbelievably there were people against it for various reasons. Mostly because they were afraid that someone might get a plate on a car that they personally didn't think they should have. Why deny people an option because you're afraid someone else might abuse it.

  27. You guys really should go to the link in the first post and read the faq's - lots of misinformation in this thread!

Program starts as soon as 7500 pre-orders are received!

    Licenseplates.tv. Buy anything you want.

I ordered new personalized std white California plates for my OT '76 Porsche 911.
Picked em up at DMV when they came in. Went out to car and put the stickers on the licenseplates.tv blue & yellow plates I'd ordered with the same numbers I'd ordered from the DMV, viola! Instant custom early plates.

The only issue is before '76, plates couldn't be personalized. No problem (if you don't mind that the character spacing is for 7 digits instead of 6.) Just order whatever six digit plate DMV will give you, THEN order a duplicate set at licenseplates.tv to match. Then do as I did.

PS, if you're a cheap ******* like I am? I ordered only one plate ($75 each) took it to an independent print place (Kinko's won't do it) made a few copies on hard card stock before I put the stickers, used it up front.

  30. ^^Nothing like telling the entire world that you're fooling the system.....

The State takes licensing and registering really serious. Gotta be careful, brother.
