Had a new Roadster shipped from WA. to AZ. in an inclosed trailer. Trailer burned in WY. is still on side of road. Driver said car was on top in the middle and does not look hurt said it did not get much if any heat just smoke suit on the rear, the car was covered with a light plastic which he says did not melt. The tires did not look bad. will find out more later today. I think I would like them to pay it off then sell it back to me and I would just take my truck to WY and pick it up. I just don't know what to do. LATER.
Man thats wrong!!!!!!!!! Shiftymutt and I have cars heading across the country in open trailers as we speak.
Sounds like you got lucky, but its a shitty day till you know for sure man. i been driving truck for a living off and on (mostly on) for almost 18 years now and have seen a LOT of trailer fires. if the car is wrapped in plastic that didnt melt, trust me it didnt sustain any heat damage at all. water/foam/smoke damage maybe... Truck fires burn HOT AS HELL, but unless you are hauling combustable or flamable freight, they dont spread much if any. i have personaly burned one up myself due to a tire fire and so keep your chin up. might not have any damage at all
Open trailers won't stop a disaster. I took this in a yard in Phoenix a few weeks ago... Rare? If you lookk close you can see that the fire was so hot that the trailer started to sag!
yea tire fires are bad medicine for sure. the advantage to an open trailer like that car hauler, or a flatbed of some, over a dry van or reefer unit (closed trailers) durring a fire was explained to me to be two reasons: 1, they (open trailers) cannot build and maintain as much heat as a closed trailer, which wont allow the fire to consume as much before it can be put out. from what i was told, a fire in an enclosed trailer, (or any confined space for that matter) is oxygen deprived, and just smolders sort of like the embers at the bottom of a campfire. they get HOT AS HELL but dont consume as much "fuel" 2, its WAY easier to fight a fire on an open trailer because you can get TO the fire with water or foam. however an open fire can breathe, and they spread faster and consume just about everything there. NO fire is better than another in my opinion. vehicle fires are BAD BAD BAD. seen many a nice car on the side of the road burned out, and more than once have seen trucks do the same. the fire i had back in '99 when i was working for CFMF (Consolidated Freightways) was caused by a number of shit that went wrong in a big hurry. started mostly with a bad wheel bearing on the dolly generating heat (some drivers call them converters, they couple the front trailer to the back one(s). simply an axle with a reach, pintle ring and a 5th wheel) i had noticed the hub was low on lube in Vegas and added some to top it off. man it was a HOT freekin day heading toward LA... anyhow, about 20 miles east of Baker CA, i noticed chunks of gator (recap) flying off the right side of the trailers, and pulled over. as i pulled over, another driver yelled on the CB that i had smoke comming from the right side, so i grabbed the extinguisher and woke up my partner in the bunk. by the time i got back there the inside tire was flaming, and the outside one was smoking to beat hell. i shot the extinguisher at it, but knew dam well it wasnt gonna stop shit. takes a TON of water to cool a tire on fire, or foam to stop it from burning more till it can cool on its own. i told my partner Mike to get in the truck and get ready to pull the unit forward and i'd pull the pin on the dolly an drop the back trailer, then drop the dolly about 30' in front and then drag the front trailer away from the fire. saved both trailers, but did some damage to the back one and some freight inside from the heat. the dolly was TOTALY lost. the right side where the fire was melted the frame and warped the spindle. worst one i ever seen tho, was a bobtail tractor that had caught fire and was on a flatbed getting hauled to the junkyard... highest thing above the ground was the top of the head. OK,,, sermon over. LOL seriously, i DO hope your car made it OK. from the sound of it, its prolly alright with a good coat of wax, new tires an mebbe an airfreshener.
OOOOMG! I would be freaking until I got to see a pict of the car on the trailer or on the ground..... Is there any way you can get some emailed to you? Best of luck....im sure (from the way it sounds) its okay
when you get the car get an estimate to have the interior removed and cleaned along with the bare interior cleaned and the car completly detailed. there is a company that cleans houses after boiler fires or stove fires and they clean every thing from rugs to dry cleaning the funature scrubbing the walls .
I saw a trailer fire on a cow carrier once. That was nasty. To the glue factory they went. You're probably licking them off your stamps as we speak.
Where in Wyoming, if I am close I can take pics or give it a good eyeballing. I am in SW (Rock Springs) Wy. Let me know. Geno
I saw a 18wheeler with enclosed trailer burn on the side of I-10 here.... and watched 3 Ferraris slowly melting into the pavement. Not a pretty sight.
early to mid 50s. years ago i prolly would have remembered exactly. i like all kinds of cars, not just RAT RODZ ...
The truck is near Manville WY. on a two lane road don't know the rt nr. It should be in town tonight. there has to be work just to get the rear door open.
HO-LY SHIT ! I can't imagine getting that call ! What kind of car was it ? Obviously a roadster, but what was it ? I would have a nervous breakdown until that fucking car got to my house. Hope everything works out well for you man. -Aaron
You're an IDIOT! If something like this happened to you, you wouldn't want people making stupid jokes about your misfortune. Duster, I'm sorry to hear this. I hope everything turns out allright.
