C'mon Jang, you're the same way! Ha..

I actually got the blow-off canopy idea from what happened to Rick Stewart, in '67 I think. Rick is still the official current starter for the NHRA right? I read somewhere that back in the mid-sixties he was on a hard pass, pulled the 'chute at 200+ and the entire back half of the car popped off with him still strapped in it!!!! The rail continued on down the track and he wound up coming to a stop, wrapped in the parachute with only minor injuries.

Imagine...You're screaming down the track, at the last light you pull the 'chute and BANG! you're staring at your feet floating in mid-air while your car leaves without you. Hey...He had a parachute and a helmet. Skydivers do that !@#$ for fun all the time!

Anyway, that latest sketch just attaches the driver and the capsule to the rear of a current T/F car, away from everything. He could be so low and back that, if the pod was built right he may be SAFER than being in front of all that exploding shrapnel. The cars computer could read the situation, inflate airbags inside the pod and blow it off fighter plane style. Heck, the driver might float down into the pits and be signing autographs before the emergency crews douse the fire on the car!

Anyway, I don't think visibility would be TOO bad either. The motor is already what? 4 feet from the axle, then with the drivers eyes roughly 4 feet to the rear of it, that makes the motor 8 feet away from the driver's head. The capsule could be an isolating cocoon made out of carbon fiber with "crush zones" built in, a lot like an F-1 car body.

That's it for me. I'm back to work, but this thread has been cool so far. I'd like to see the other badasses like Norwell, Jeem etc. on here doing art too. That Champion car has inspired me like crazy, I'm sure those boys could have a ball...

    Conder-
I have always watched you from afar. Really cool art and your ideas are great.
I have had the honor and privilege of working withthe Champion Speed Shop on this project. Much of what you mention is the very material we had to wade through during the design phase.
With regard to you separating pod concept, I would offer a few thoughts.
First would be the issue of added weight.
Much of this might come from mechanical linkages and connections that were required to be detachable and reliable. This might point one in the direction of a drive-by-wire solution.
Next would be the issue of immediate massive deceleration loading on thwe drivers body. This could be eased by using a smaller chute for an emergency event (separation). The lower mass would be WAY over decelerated by the same chute used to slow the entire mass of a car. While airbags help here, internal organs react to these stresses in a potentially fatal way when stopped too quickly.

The guys in aerospace have been wrestling with these issues since before the jet-age and there is a ton of info available to you on the subjects.

Just the thought of putting safety at this level of concern speaks volumes of a designer like you.
Keep creating. Keep thinking . And just keep producing. Period.

  9. Adam, seems like many on the HAMB mean well, but just can't get it through their thick skulls what driving a fuel car is like. They haven't been burned, nearly blinded by flying parts or soaked in super hot oil and nitro. As you most assuradley know from your dad, driving one of those so called " real nostalgia cars" was great fun and done by very brave men, but dangerous as hell at their very best. As to running a non-hemi, I salute you and your Champion Speed Shop freinds. I am not only a non fan of hemi's, but I have never been a Chevy fan either. I am an old school fool and a Ford nut. However, the one and only Chevy I have ever liked was the Champion Speed Shop sbc. I still remember when they out ran Garlits. Man, what a day that was.

My own car is the resurrected AA/Fuel Coupe powered by a unique blown 430 CI Lincoln engine named the GizzleHopper. We were at the CHHR last year and will be again this year. Talk about flying parts, fire and hot oil,,,try running one of those an 85% nitro!!!!!!!!!!!!

See you at the CHHR and by-the-way, Ed Dear says to say hello.

Beeper - Thanks for bumping this up. In hindsight, there really is some thought provoking stuff on this thread.
Update - The CSS now has the clutch figured out. The AA/FD class may soon be grabbing their ankles...
And yeah, check out the Champion Speed Shop site for even more updates (and a killer in-car video of Adam making a pass). Mike Bumbeck does a great job on this site.

There it is^^-racing is about going fast. Funny Cars don't look the same, neither do dragsters. You may say that's why they aren't as popular, or whatever, but going the fastest means you give up something somewhere. In this case, it "the look". I want to know (if it isn't in this thread), what kid of times this SBC (YAY) is turning.

If you'll run Corvette valve covers, you'll pick up a tenth. :) The video was awesome.
