ok , i put a new gas tank on my truck. truck ran fine for a day, then started stalling, and hiccuping, surging, etc. today it stalled and woulndn't start. i towed it home and when i unhooked the fuel line from the carb i got no fuel when i cranked it over. ok, new fuel pump. back together, alls well, then bam - stalling, hiccuping, will crank but won't start. checked again, plenty of fuel at carb. plenty of spark.

truck ran fine before i switched tanks. plenty of spark, etc. before i tear down the carb, am i missing something?

  2. How was it running before you replaced the tank?

make sure the lines are tight and not letting it vent. open up cap and put some pressure back through line to tanks and listen to make sure it isn't plugged with something.

I say lack of ventilation. Uncap the tank when this is happening and see if theres a vacuum.

Did we replace the cap too? May need to be vented.

New cap? or cap you always used? If it is a new cap along with the new tank how is the tank vented? If it isn't vented the fuel pump creates a vacuum in the tank and the engine dies.

I saw your other post, kink in the line or line smashed for one reason or another could be it too.

If the tank is properly vented I'd think that you picked up some trash out of the new tank either from when it was made, sitting around or from the gas can that you had the gas in.

That is the first thing I thought too, maybe the vent is smashed, or maybe no vent at all ? Or a piece of junk was jarred loose and made it's way to the carb jets.

it was a new tank, but the old cap. i relocated the filler cap and thought that maybe it wasnt venting so i did remove the cap but no help.

That's one thing eliminated. If you pull the line off at the carb and put the line in a plastic container to catch the gas can you blow gas through by putting a bit of pressure on the tank at the filler neck?

One other thing could be that the pickup tube might be loose in what ever holds it in the tank. As in ****ing air above the level of fuel in the tank.

You might want to pull your inline filter and check to see if it's clogged too. You can usually tap the inlet end on the work bench or any other hard surface and see if crud comes out.

That was a "new" tank and not just a new to the car thank wasn't it?

I put a brand new Hi Zoot tank in an F1 we built a few years back. did a similar thing. Turned out, after MUCH frustration, fuel pump changing etc, that the pickup was too close to the bottom of the tank and actually ****ed the tank against it sealing it off! Took the pickup out, shortened it by 1/2" and all has been well for years now!

wondering if pump gave up the ghost. If you can blow back into the tank and hear bubbles, pump would be at fault. This new gas, hmm not starting a new topic but eats up older gaskets, o rings. Have ran into this myself on carb'd vehicles.

Plenty of fuel and spark....Had a friend who had a similar problem with poor and finally stopped running and it turned out that he got some gas that was mixed with diesel fuel at his last fill up. Take a fuel sample and see how it looks and smells ....you never know.

Did you flush out the new tank? I flushed my new tank and was surprised at the amount of shavings inside. It's too late to flush, but now the **** is in the line.

ok guys; thanks for all the replies. i think its fixed. where the pickup came out the top of the tank it made a bend before the rubber hose connection. there was a rust hole right on the top of that bend and i guess it was ****ing in too much air. i patched it all up and went for a drive; everything seems fine. rust ****s.

this was a common issue with gm cars in the 60's and i bought more than a few with this problem: roll a fuel line and a gas can in the trunk and away we went.:D

I had a 47 Chevy woody wagon that would run out of gas at a 1/2 tank. I pulled the sending unit to find that the brace on the dip tube had vibrated a crack in the tube. I figured a bad sender but I soldered the crack and all was well.
