One of our buddies has acquired a 55 ford mainline Gasser as of this weekend. Really cool car alot of custom & period correct goodies and mysteries on it. It has a 460 BB ford in it that runs sound has no mods all stock 460. We would like add some more HP to this tough truck motor 429 heads? Any recommendations for ford 460s add ons? Any mean street cam recommendations. We would like to keep the car street and not full strip while also maintaining a nutsack
The 429 was the earlier performance version of what turned into the 460, so 427 stuff it totally unrelated and won't fit. Generally a cam swap will do what you want. You didn't mention what it has for a drivetrain, but odds are it's probably a stock C6 automatic. If you put more cam in it, you'll want to add more stall speed, and also consider what rearend gears it has. If you look at camshafts for sale at places like Summit, you'll find an RPM range listed. If you get something that will work from 2500 rpm and up, then it'll sound more racy than what you have now. But you'll also want a 3000 stall converter, and probably 3.70-4.11 rear gears. and also add the other recommended parts, such as valve springs, timing chain set, check for coil bind, and check piston to valve clearance. Then we'll get into different intake/carb setups.
This engine is too new for HAMB, so I expect this to get axed. Most 460s were from the malaise era. They have low compression and lazy timing, both valve and ignition. That is what to concentrate on to get bang for the buck and wake the thing up. They also have the architecture for BIG inches if money is flowing. https://www.coasthigh.com/Ford-460-based-engine-kits-s/1301.htm
yeah, they're too new, and they suck, but they can be woken up with a cam change and headers. Already has the headers.
If fund's allow and he wants to be period correct, axe the 460 and put a 427 fe with dual quad's in it and back it up with a top loader 4 speed.
If I remember right, the 460 first came out in the 68 or 69 Lincoln. I had one in my 70 Mk III and I believe it was rated at 385 HP.
Before you start buying parts for it you need to find out what 460 you have in there…that is if it’s 460 in the first place. Could be a 429, they look identical.
Allways liked the 55 ford as a gasser my brother had a Yblock powered 55 four door gasser back in the 70's
