Hey guys, after lurking for an hour i joined up. Lots of info on here from what i've seen, still cant drive, but hopefully my 5 years of work count somewhat? ALOT of work on a 72 challenger...ready for the road now, but i'm getting more and more interested in hot rods than musclecars. Flatheads, Early hemi's...i'm likin it all! Really into mopars for past 5 years, still am, but wouldnt mind having some other brand muscle around for sure, along with a rod or 2. For my first question here....wth is Z'ing a car mean? Glad to be on HAMB!
Welcome to the HAMB. This is the place to be if you're interested in trad rods. First off, you "z" a frame--not the car. We ain't unibody here! "Z"ing the frame is putting a step in the frame, to lower the stance of the car. By "z"ing the car, you are able to lower the car by raising the level that the axles ride at compared to the ground. Basically, you'd cut the frame where you desired a "step," weld in a diagonal piece and then weld the remaining frame piece to the diagonal, resulting in the Z-shape. This is more drastic than "c"ing the frame, where you just cut a semicircle in the frame (and be sure to box it for strength!) to increase suspension travel. Welding on a frame is something not to be done lightly--only a person who has superb skill should be doing it. I'd personally not try this sort of thing myself--a man's got to know his limitations (and I don't have a MIG)--having the frame come apart would not be fun, I wager. Hope this makes sense. My first answer to a question! Woo hoo! Tucker
