Hi, I just joined and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Tom and up untill recently I've been mostly concerned with muscle cars, but recently I've decided to build something a little more old school. I just picked up a '51 Plymouth Concord. It's got a good body but the front crossmember has some rust holes, I was wondering if anyone has any advice about putting a 2nd generation firebird subframe in (just what I have laying around) Or if it would be better to swap over a complete frame out of something like an S-10. I'm trying to shy away from a full frame mainly because I'm afraid to tackle all the body mounts on a somewhat rotten car, and also I haven't found anything close to the 111 inch wheel base. I was just wondering if there are any major concerns I should have with a swap like this as I have heard horror stories about screwing up the ride hight and the look of the car. I plan on lowering the car and possibly bagging it so I'm not concerned about achieving a stock look. If anyone has any advice or references for me I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Tom
In general, an 'F' body subframe is too wide for fifties cars. Try instead, an 'A' body front frame section (1978-1992), the width is nearly perfect, and works very well, in my own experience. Cosmo
Welcome to the HAMB ! I've got a 50 Plymouth 2-door that I will most likely sub in the future....from what I've measured up so far an S-10 stub mite work altho one oroblem area w/that mite be the steering box sits kinda far out front. I've heard that 68-74 Nova (or clones) subs will work but they seem too wide. Probly those 78-up A body clips are the way to go. Has anyone done a 50's Mopar w/ one of these?
