    image.jpg Hello everyone.
I bought a 33 Plymouth Coupe less than a month ago. Most of the hard work had already been done, but plenty left to do. I always wanted a Street Rod and I'm finally realizing my dream!
I was wondering if anyone here can tell me if the gas talk cover panel for a 33 Plymouth Coupe is the same part as is on a 34 Dodge Coupe. I'm finding some websites that list the part and say it's for 33/34 Plymouth or Dodge. I find others that listed it for a 34 Dodge and made no mention of it fitting the Plymouth or a 33 model.

    Thanks for any replies!

    Thanks guys!
As for plans, I'm feeling my way along. It seems I get one thing fixed and 2 other things I hadn't even thought about. First thing I want to do is be able to drive it, legally, on the road. I want to drive it some and make sure the kinks are worked out before having it painted.
I have the hood tops and have ordered the hood sides from Rootlieb, so it's going to have a full hood.
I can order all the glass but whoever did the body work welded some tubing into the windshield area where the swing out frame use to be. I assume this was so the new windshield can have a rubber moulding put on it and glued in. I'm afraid if I order a glass kit the windshield won't work. I don't know where to get the moulding and I'm not sure any of the glass shops around here are capable taking care of this. So, I'm kinda stumped on that part.
The car runs fine. I drove it today. A little windy without a windshield! It has a newly rebuilt 350 SBC and rebuilt TH350 transmission, I think. I think a windshield and front signal lights will make it legal. I've been waiting for 3 weeks on the State Police to verify the serial number so I can apply for a bonded title and get a license tag for it.
Basically, it lacks glass, interior, all the rubber, decent headlight mounts, front turn signals, putting the hood on, replacing the gas tank cover panel and then it should be close to ready to paint.
I bought the car from a woman that her husband passed away last year. They bought the car out of a pasture and had it for 17 years. I paid her about half what she said they had in it. It came with the power window kit and vintage air also. I will have to buy a compressor but the rest is there, even the compressor mounting bracket.
It just doesn't seem like I'm getting much done for fixing small things, but I guess that's what it's all about!

It would look sweet without the hood sides... Just the straps... I've always liked that look...
Just my opinion though... It's your vision...
    Enjoy!!!

I debated about that for some time before ordering the sides. The engine has a fair amount of chrome goodies on it. I like the open side look too but one of my buddies and my wife finally talked me into the sides. I looked long and hard at some other 33's before ordering them though!

  8. Always love the Plymouth coupes, the 33's were sone of the nicest made, the top always looked as though it had a slight chop. Lucky man. Oh, and welcome to the HAMB.

There is a Fiberglass company that specializes in 30`s Plymouth and Dodge bodies and parts. Their name is Ply Do. I don't know their website off hand but you can search the web for them.

On the tank cover, you could check w/a Dodge/Plymouth group...if the covers are different, then just pretend it's like
a typical Ford aftermarket piece, and trim/mangle to suit!

It used to be popular to do flush mount windshields using Chevy S-10 setting moulding.

    Great start!
"I think a windshield and front signal lights will make it legal.".
If it's registered as a 1933, you probably don't need turn signals to be legal. If you add them, make them small and try to hide them so it doesn't take away from the clean front end.

Owner died, crappy customer service anyhow. Heard someone was trying to resurrect the business a few years ago but haven't hear anything after that.

P.S. terms like street rod & rat rod tend to be frowned upon here.

A little more information please. Both on the car and yourself via introduction to the HAMB. Where are you located? You might want to check out my thread on my 33 Dodge Build and some of the other threads on 33/34 Dodge/Plymouth builds here on HAMB.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm feeling my way around navigating the forum.
I live in Arkansas, just a little south of Little Rock. I recently retired, I was offered an early retirement deal because of the downturn in the oil industry. It wasn't a great deal but was good enough for me to take the step. I'll be 61 in August.

I don't have any pictures of the car before I got it, but may be able to get one. It belonged to one of my buddy's father in law and I have seen a picture of it. It wasn't a very good picture though. It's my understanding the rust wasn't that bad. It had some floor pan work and both doors had patch panels put in them. I don't know if the previous owner did much himself other than tinker with the car. Someone else did all the frame work, mounts the motor, transmission, Mustang II front end and rear end. Another person did the body work and put the steel in the top. Then another person painted the inside, did the wiring, gages and so forth. I assume yet another did the exhaust work.

When I first saw the car it wasn't running. It didn't have a carburetor on it. But they had the carburetor. I had the opportunity to work on it a little before deciding to buy it. I got it running and drove it a little. Transmission seemed fine and it drove good. She had a stack of receipts that she said totaled to over $22k they had in the car. I offered her $10k. Her response was I will give you a couple of days to think about it and if you don't want it I have someone else that wants to look at it. I gave her $12k.

Just another SBC. Put the sides on. Nothing to see here that hasn't been seen a million times. If it were a Chrysler engine, people might want to see something. How something was done, etc......

Your car looks to be a rumble seat car. Does the rear deck still open backwards? There is a company called NC Industries I believe in North Carolina. That have all the parts to put a stock windshield in it if it is not modified. It does appear it might be modified. Closer pictures would show. You got a great deal on the car if it is all steel. Any questions please ask more. Do not call it a Street Rod on here. I don't put pictures of my car because it is a STREET ROD.

It is a rumble seat car and the lid still opens backwards. The windshield area has been modified and it will no longer use the windshield frame. See pic below. I've been thinking about ordering a glass kit for the car but don't know if the windshield would fit, since it's been altered. Another of my concerns is weatherstripping. I've found a couple of places to buy it. I wonder if it's all the same rubber or are there places selling some kind of generic one size fits all kind of rubber and not the correct rubber.

The car is all steel with the exception of the fenders and running boards. After seeing some of the projects here, I now realize how much work has actually been put into this car. I feel fortunate to have found a car like this at this stage. I feel like I can handle it from here. Not so sure I would have the patience.

I have to ask, why is Street Rod not an acceptable term here? Is the correct term "Hot Rod"?

Street rod evokes an image that is not appropriate with the rules of this site.

This site is all bout vehicles built in the pre-1965 style.

Street rods tend to have flashy things like billet, modern appearing engines (or actual modern engines), crazy modern paint jobs, modern wheels, IFS on an open-wheeled car, an overabundance of bolt-on generic parts, etc.

    These are street rods:

Where you take your car is your business.

Whether or not it is accepted here is up to the site rules, and the tolerance of the moderators.

To the OP, to make this a hot rod:

If you are going to run hood sides, run louvered ones.
Get some chrome (or stainless) in a few key locations (headlight rings, window trim, door handles, etc.)
Solid classic paint color. Fenders in black works too.
Remove those tires from the wheels and have them properly recycled. Then, take a plasma cutter or torch to the wheels, to make sure that they NEVER are mounted on another car, ever again.
Replace the wheels and tires with something more appropriate, as your budget allows. Steel, painted the body color, or in a classic contrasting color, with matching caps and rings, is a good option.

Like I said, it is your car, and your business.

    I'm just making friendly suggestions.

The hood sides I have ordered are louvered. My plans are to paint the car a solid color. If you look at the firewall, that's the color.
