OK so, Im finally getting around to doing the introduction thing after being a long time lurker and a rare I mean rare poster (what do I have 3?) Hey, a man of few words what can I say? Im a crusty old fart born in the 50s, who had the usual assortment of perforated northeast rust buckets growing up. First car was a 64 Impala convertible with more bondo than metal, but a GREAT cruiser with a BIG back seat (priority #1 at the time.) Then a series of Chevelles, Corvairs, .a 29 Essex (rodded and rotted) a Morris Minor (WTF?) a Skylark convertible and a POS Triumph Spitfire that was towed more times than I can count but when it ran, man it was mad fun on the backroads of backwoods Connecticut. Had a 62 Impala daily driver for many years with the first family, then got divorced and blah blah blah. OK OK .I know. fast forward already. Current rides are a 65 Plymouth Sport Fury convertible 383 4-speed. I know its not quite HAMB vintage but I can pack the whole (second) family in it and the kids LOVE to go to cruises and shows in it. Also a 75 Corvette convertible that I had before the kids and, well come on my wife looks GREAT driving it. My project is a 59 Corvette that I dug (literally check out my albums) out of my father-in-laws garage. For the first 10 years of dating and then marriage, all I could see of this car was one unmistakable headlight/fender of the vette. I wasnt allowed to look, touch, or even speak of the car that shall remain nameless as I was still considered unworthy and besides as we all know, he was going to restore it . someday. Anyway, after many years of not being a jerk to his daughter not to mention plying him with alcohol and what not, I softend the old guy up and he deemed me worthy to at least assess the relic. Oh boy maybe I should have left well enough alone. I think the pictures of what I call the archeological dig tell the story. Scary yellow paint .lots of collision and body modification damage partially rotted frame .NOM ..but jeeeeez, it was free and all, so what the hell, lets drag it home. Now, Im looking for suggestions on where to go with this thing. The challenge with this project is going to be to not get upside down on the $$$$$$ which would be easy if I even thought about doing a restoration to original. Ive already boxed the frame and have a 350 to drop in, so Im obviously not worried about originality. Im thinking about leaving all the missing and expensive stainless molding off, filling in all the holes, possibly shaving the handles, lowering it and going for a clean, smooth, single color look. I might leave the chrome spears in the coves just to break it up a little, rebuild the stock suspension and .thats it. Any thoughts? Im open to all low cost suggestions, and now that Ive popped my cherry with the intro, hopefully Ill get involved in more of the discussions. Nice to be aboard.
Got rid of a 65 Plymouth Fury III not too long ago. 318 Poly, cool car it was. Where in Jersey you at?
