OK, I'm working on a new brand package for Seret Speed & Custom in Vallejo, CA. The idea is something more '30s-'40s than the common '50s look. More Art Deco and vintage World's Fair inspired than bang, pow '50s zinger art. Sophisticated and sleek yet cool and approachable.

Here's what I have so far. What do you think?

I don't have the red X on my screen. Let me try a different file type.

    Better?

Good but I think I have seen that before. Red X's are normally copyrighted aren't they Kirk?

  5. And NOT from the 30's........more like 1990's;)

Is it still a red X?

  7. Works now.

The font does not look 30's/40's art deco to me though.

I really dig the illustration and layout.... looks real clean.

I'm not sure about the font choices, I'm a big fan of the copperplate font family.. but not sure that it works that great here. Maybe its just the relationship with "Speed & Custom" I'm not to fond of. I would change the "Speed & Custom" font... Looks a little generic (which Matt's work definitely isn't)

Also.. if you keep the fonts.. play with the kerning in SERET a little more, the E & T look closer together than the rest. I think if the logo is used smaller than what were looking at now the E & T will look like they are attached.

    Just my thoughts...
    Looking good so far.

I think it looks good. Original but still gets the point across. I like the speed and custom font.

i think deadender is on the mark. not crazy about the speed and custom font. but i am a big fan of the copperplate too.

i think it would look rad if it was all handcarved and then put back in electronic format. since everything has to be nowadays...

I don't usually like Copperplate, but I wanted something that felt dated (in a good way).

    Kerning addressed...

I like the Speed & Custom, but maybe I'll look at doing it by hand.

I really like the overall look, but the "Speed & Custom" script font doesn't fit the 1930s art deco poster theme at all IMO. It looks more like something from a 1970s typewriter.

For the "Seret" font, did you try any fonts that look like the headlines in these (specifically, Europa, Uranus, and Neptune):

We use copperplate in our logo. While no one really heard of it until the computer age, it was designed by Goudy at the turn of the century. So it fits in that respect. But I think if you are going for the World's Fair type look, you can do better typographically. Look at some of the posters and signage from the '33 Worlds Fair.

The script I think isn't cutting it for me. I think that particular font is cheapening your concept.

I didn't want to go too literally down the Art Deco world, but it's a possibility.

Love the illustration... The fonts are from the wrong era. I agree with the above. Something more obscure would be nice... I've always thought it was a good idea to go custom on lettering for logos.

  21. Lets put it this way.............it looks like you stole JimA's avatar and tweaked it. Serious.

I like it, but Copperplate has been over done... find a more Deco looking font. Also, you might make the top an arch instead of straight... just a suggestion.

Just some input from a nobody!

Deco artwork usually is very dramatic in its presentation, and in some way visually suggests motion. I'm not sure what I am suggesting! The car itself is deco-influenced but I don't think the artwork is.

Maybe not the most constructive feedback, but you're .02 richer. :D

  27. Wow!!! Excellent constructive criticism Uno!!! Just what Kirk was looking for - and from a design genius to boot.

My ¢¢: Everything you said but I'd kick the T closer to the E and eliminate the serifs to make a ligature. How about something in the Bauhaus vein for the secondary copy? Or a more art deco script?

Great thread KIRK!, can't wait to see this develop. Hope we hear from Norwell and django, too. (Ooops, django types faster than me:D)
