No inspection in NC if 30 years old. I live in the smallest county (of 100) & no smog inspection. The down fall is a complete inspection by DMV if U bring in an out of state car over 30 years old. To get a ***le it must p*** & be driveable. If it's a Hot Rod or custom, it may receive a NC VIN & ***led for the year it was last modified. I had an Outlaw bodied '34 coupe ***led as a "2007 Custom" subject to all the taxes, inspections of any other 2007. If it is over 30 years old, U can register as an "Antique" & pay county tax on $500 value but it limits driving - no daily driver. U can also display a "year of manufacture" tag (not necessarily NC) but current tag must be in vehicle subject to inspection. I have no complaints compared to other states. I have gotten plenty of stares when I have visited my kids in NY & MA with my truck & tag.
