Wowee, what a score. Give it a good bath and post some more pictures. As a street racer, I’m sure that those upper nozzles were there to help start it without getting out with a squirt can. My old next door neighbor had a similar setup on his blown gas hydro. Worked great. Welcome to the HAMB.
Welcome and you're gonna git a bunch of advice, You kinda have to weed through them and pick which ones you want to follow.
If I was to try and use the Hilborn could I use it with a traditional fuel cell in the trunk? I realize if would require a return line, but would the pump be able to draw fuel? Maybe I could plumb a small fuel pump to those additional injectors and run off that pump until mechanical takes over???
The pump is driven off the side of the mag. Enderle is close to my house so I'm sure I could have them go through it.
The ultimate Hot Rod ... let the back tires hang out a 1" or 2" and drive it. Congratulations on scoring the car, take tons of pictures and keep us posted as you progress.
Thanks again for all the compliments and ideas. The car currently has 29 11.50's on black steel wheels in the rear and 185s on rally wheels in the front. I may go a little wider in the rear, but that's it. I like the ride height and I have no intention of cutting the wheel wells.
If you start a different thread for the build, please post a link on here for the new thread. Welcome to the HAMB, and yes this the place to be! Very cool purchase and yes there are many jealous guys on here!
I wouldn't cut the rear wheel wells either. I like your idea of using carburetors to get it going and make it a little easier to handle.
Injection has been known to work on the street. You said this car was street raced? Do you know if it had been to a track and what times it turned? You should just keep going with this thread. It’ll be much easier for people to find.
Here's a short clip of the car running that one of the sons sent me. Unfortunately I don't know if it ever ran a timed event and neither did the son. I haven't looked closely but the blower appears to be 1:1, or close to it, so I can't imagine it made a ton of horsepower. On the other hand the car has to be pretty light as it has no floor or firewall, the hood and trunk lid are fiberglass, and it has no door glass with plexi quarter windows. I probably won't get going on this car for a month or two because I want to wrap up my current project, but I'll definitely stay active on here and keep you guys updated.
Great find. Always good to see another Tri-5 saved. Personally, I am in the no cut wheel wells group as well. Good for you for staying after the car until you got it.
I'm sending the injection and mag to Fuel Injection Interprises. He thinks it'll work for what I want to do. I'm also sending the blower out to have it gone through. After that it's just a basic fuel system, front brakes and a cooling system. I have a radiator and I'm leaning towards an electric water pump. I know it's not period correct but I love the simplicity and the fact that I can continue to cool the motor after I shut it down. I was told the block my be filled with cement so I need to remove the current water pump and take a look.
I used to fly into Burbank and service a company some 35 years ago, in Thousand Oaks. Seemed to be a 45 minute drive? Used to be a great Fish and Chips place there. Be damned if I could recall it’s name, or the Company I went to!
I just read all of this thread. This car is a fascinating piece of street racing history. I completely understand your thoughts on making it more civilized, but damn this thing must have been a blast to watch and drive back in its' heyday as it is set up. Did the Son have any idea what rear gear his Dad typically ran in that quick-change? Welcome to the HAMB. Can't wait to see the progress on your '55.......Don.
Unfortunately the boys didn't know much, but the car did come with a bunch of gear sets and the rear cover. I hope to keep the car as original as possible, just want it safe as both my kids enjoy going for cruises. I'll add front brakes and a dual pot master cylinder. I'll probably upgrade the cage as well, so my passenger and I are safe.
