I was just thinking there are some parts that have to line up with the direction of the car. The ribs on your 53 stainless have to be level I think. If they point up or down they might look crooked. Even if you re-angled it as a whole to match your slanted b post, people's eyes expect certain things to go in the same direction of the car in motion.

Cool those Lincoln caps are nice. Maybe paint in the spaces between the ford stainless ribs to match the center emblem color or your LIncoln caps.

I dig... exactly as it is. If you were on the fence about any side stainless, I'd be for it with the addition of those skirts. I think it would highlight them better but is not absolutely necessary. JMO.

I like the trim breaks up the side a bit and gives a nice starting point for the skirt. Don't really care for the lip on the skirt kind of gives it a bump that doesn't look like it belongs. Not that it matters but normally I hate bubbles skirts on mercs but those are very tastefully done.

John I might be drifting over to the dark side.:D:eek:

Agreed. I also think that they are far enough apart that unless you are viewing the car from quite a distance and at an exact profile angle like the picture posted you would never notice that the angle of the trim and the B pillar are not dead on. Spears on trim pointing up or down that should be horizontal however would stand out like a sore thumb IMO.

I think it is absolutely killer and actually improves the proportions on your vehicle 100 percent.

Are those bubble skirts or Fentons?? I thought the bubble skirts swung down with a sweeping curve by the tire and back up toward the bumper. Did you straighten out the bottom in your photoshop?

Yes, the '53 stainless looks killer. Looks like a lot of thought went into your skirt design, and it really looks good, plus it is unique.

They are bubble skirts. They've just wore down over the years form the highway. We
were going to cut them back before we put them on but I thought it would be easier to
let the highway dictate on how far they hung down. I may have touched them up a little
but they don't rub as much as they use too. LOL!!!

Thanks again for the confirmation that I might be on the right track. I really wanted to
get them done last winter but I wanted some time to set back and checkout the lines.
    I feel like I'm close.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I just order a set of fibergl*** bubble skirts from the FenderSkirt Depot in Romoland CA.

Wowie! I LOVE it w/o the stainless on the skirt. Good case of "eye candy' not needed as the overall lines of the car say it all. And the flare on the skirt bottom "goes' with the flared front fender. Still wondering how a long, thin piece of stainless on the side would look to subtly accentuate the length of the this majestic Merc. Anyway of 'photo chopping" it in?

Here are more "ponderings" using white ink ball point pen on photos of HAMB photos. Idea is to have long thin trim "appear parallel" to body lines, bubble skirts, window mouldings, rocker panels and make Merc look as long and low as possible. I always liked the sloping of the moulding on the 61 Impala as it makes car look low and also like it's already in motion. I am not sure if the trim should extend over the flare of the front fender as the flare itself subtley maintains "the line." However, it does "stretch" the front of the car. Does the chrome trim on the bubble skirt enhance and accentutate "the flow" or is it a "distractor?"

I was wanting to add a '51 Packard spear to the front but I thought it was too
much.... Thanks for showing me many options with the use of more stainless.
Thanks again guys for all of the suggestions, you've been very helpful.

You sure gave me something to think about..... "Sloping moulding? " Thanks for all of
the photo shop work, I'll have to give it some tought. I was trying to use all parts
pre '54.... I'll have to look at the '61 trim.
    .

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I think the 52 Ford look would be a unique way to go in a Mandy Holder kinda way but different.

I too, like the '53 Ford chrome trim. It breaks up the monotony of the color scheme. Run with it. Besides, I can't recall the last time I saw that particular mod on a Merc.

I like what they did to the skirt especially how they just ran it strait back like
the '52 Ford. Kool suggestion, when we get it ruffed in we will have to make the
decsion. mold it or leave it.
