Why is it that whenever you come a cross a Ford Coe, its missing its hood/grill. The Dodge's always seem to have them, even the diamond T's.
I think it is because the oval grill was produced only from 1938 to 1940 and they are preferred and sought after because they will fit in the 1941 to 1947 COE cabs that are the same.
Jerry is right it is amazing how many cabovers I see missing the grille. Even at Gene Winfields yard this summer he had a nice cabover but it was missing the grille too. A friend of mine that was huge into Cabovers also said they almost always bumped into things usually bending up the grille. Most of the Fords have the bumper close to the front....not a lot of protection. Also with a cabover they were overconfident on how close they could get.
at the moultrie swapemeet in november i seen a guy strap a coe cab he had bought there on the back of an s10. talk about crazy i wished i would of had my camera with me.
And the other thing I usually see is damage to the back and top of the cab from hauling stuff. My latest cab is almost perfect except for a big dent in the back of the cab above the rear window. I guess I'd rather fix dents instead of rust though.
I figured that was the COE you were talking about. I just couldn't find a pic other than this small one. It used to belong to my Uncle's good friend Steve Paulus.
That picture was taken at the 50th Topper Car Show in Fargo this past March. On the back is a bichin 32 with an Arden Flathead built by Rick Schnell.
More I look at the photo it was probably GSTA in St. Paul? They were also at Toppers. That weekend had a blizzard up in Fargo we were snowed in Sunday night and could not leave until Monday when they reopened the interstate.
oh yeah, the wheels were the customers choice and suprised me and brough them in, i had to try and not laugh. but sometimes when you build profesionaly you have to do what they want no matter what you like.
Wow, that is one nice truck!! Beautiful paint and body work that I'd love to match someday. I remember when the truck was featured in Street Rodder not too long ago. I knew I had seen it somewhere before.
Thanks Bull! I tried to blow that pic up but I didn't have any luck without distorting it. How your leg doing? And did you get the insurance claim settled on the your Model A? Hope to see you back on the road again next summer.
Jep, Welcome to the HAMB thank you for posting the photo. Have to find my issue of Street Rodder and review the details on that build, beautifull work.
That was taken at the 2006 GSTA show in St. Paul according to the GSTA website www.gstarod-custom.com Unfortunately that was the only size I could find the pic too.
haha thanks guys, appreciate the compliments. just some more pics of the truck, maybe good for ideas maybe not. like i say, this one doesnt haul much of anything though it could with a 1ton dually rear and an ls1 with 4l60e. owner doesnt use her much, what a shame i say. oh well, to each there own
One of my first SR mags was this cover truck issue. I have read the article too many times to count. I used to restore old mini coopers, and because of this truck, i jumped ship to build my first american hotrod. Glad your on the HAMB Jeb, now I can bother you with questions. JZ
haha thanks man, minis to coe's now thats a serious jump! glad to hear that people even remember the truck. flattering to say the least. you can check out jebsmetalandspeed.com for more pics of other hot rods ive built if you want. good luck on all your coe projects guys.
heres a pic of my car carrier i'm building. and a pic of my 41 coe. i don't have the heart to cut it up. still has the running flatty with two speed and a dump bed. only paid $900 for it, and $75 for my effy http://i27.tinypic.com/2ur6yi0.jpg http://i29.tinypic.com/245aqfk.jpg
Hey man I recently picked up a 1938 ford coe and I am trying to figure out some of the same things that you are. Mainly a donor vehicle to put my cab on where the steering won't be so involved.
Cool stuff. One thing to look into is insurance. That is the problem MilesM ran into. His insurance company wanted to insure it as a commercial vehicle. He decided to set it up as a fifth wheel and pull a trailer instead.
WOW! I finally got another '47 Ford COE home that I bought a few months ago from a cell phone pic the owner sent me. It was just 120 miles away in Kimball, SD which happens to be where my Dad grew up in the dirty thirties. Anyway I found out about it from a truck driver who works for the trucking company that hauled my rusty Ebay ripoff POS from North Carolina. He had spotted it when he delivered a front end loader to the guys farm and could see this one was pretty nice. The cab was just sitting in the tree belt in the dirt. Now I have three of the old girls (I think I have a COE addiction...) but will only need one to build. The rusty one goes up for sale for parts and pieces next week. Maybe someone can use something out of it or else it will go to the crusher. Next I'll have to decide to use this one or the red one. <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From My 1938-1947 Ford COE Project</td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From My 1938-1947 Ford COE Project</td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From My 1938-1947 Ford COE Project</td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From My 1938-1947 Ford COE Project</td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From My 1938-1947 Ford COE Project</td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From My 1938-1947 Ford COE Project</td></tr></table>
Jerry, 1st time I have seen this thread. Did you know about a guy in the western part of ND who handles COE's ?
Heck, whats his name, he used to come in the shop!? Jerry what was the farmer in Kimball? Dated a girl from there in college.
