rebuild the stock axle and have it dropped. it you set on doing road rally buy a porsche! the 223 engines run like a clock and your right in stock form pretty gutless. you can take a front crossmember from a f-100 up to 65'? and weld it in if you want a V8. FE motors,C6 swap really wake these trucks up. minimum a duel mc. uprade to brakes.
You wanna know something funny? I was in a buddy's shop the other day, and underneath a late model 2WD Grand Cherokee. It's considered a luxury SUV, right- BUT it has a solid axle in front. That's right, a straight TUBE for a front axle. Yeah, it's high up and doesn't handle like a Vette, but all of the people who imply that solids are inherently "unsafe" need to chickety-check their common sense on this. if you're using components that appropriate for the application, and have proper spring travel, spring dampening, and no bump steer, a solid axle is plenty good enough.
Doug, here's a shot of mine...Like I said, if I ever decide to rob a bank I'll be going to Plainville and YOU'LL be going up the river for 10-20!
My club taught me lots about lowering, in part with reversing the rear springs, it's got a camaro clip from a prev. owner. Will soon build a stock frame the trad lowering way (at least in the front). Don't see near enough '57-'60 Effies on here, how's yer project comin?
Here is a pic of my truck right after I lowered it. Mono-leaf with reversed eyes in the front axle over the springs in the rear. To give you and idea of how much the mono leafs dropped the front...those are 205-75r15s in the front. Im doing some rust repair on the bed. I'll have some pix of it all put back together soon ps apparently my buddy jeff has some Captain in him lol
Quick question guys? I've been following all the threads on the 57-59 F-100's as well as the 55-59 Chevs. Because of the front wheel openings, when these trucks are lowered (usually subframed) an inch or two is added to the wheel-base to center the front wheels. What are you doing when you use a dropped axel? Are you off-centering the mounting pads to move the axel forward? Any of you have a side view of a dropped axel in one of these? Thanks, Sam
Looks good, the 292 looks great sitting in there. What did you wind up doing for the front suspension?
