I have not got the banjo axle but removed all its bracketry onto my axle ,im not sure what measurement you want ,is it the distance from the axle centre line to spring centre line at the at the shackle ?

Bob, the axle center line to spring center line is the same on rearends 1932-1948. however, since 32, 33, and 34 has the "compound curve" spring, the hangers are shorter. so, with a stock spring on a later rearend, you have effectively pushed the rearend forward.

i am using a 1948 rearend and spring in mine, and have shaved the spring to conform to the curve in the rear crossmember.

if you want to use the stock spring, you'll also need to use 1934 hangers on your rear too.

    hope that helps.

the spring hangers on a 33-34 rear end are shorter than the later rear ends,so the center line of the rear end to the center line of the spring shackles . is not the same as the later rear ends, also the 34 spring hangers have a cant to them, you would have to heat and bend them to fit a later spring, best bet would be use a 37 to 40 rear end and grind the straight later spring to fin the curved cross member, I believe the 41 through 48 rear ends are wider in width, Dave

ah, right, dave. good call. center line of axle to center line of spring are same. not shackles. sorry for the misdirection. i'll correct the post above too.

i am doing as you suggested, grinding the spring to fit the curved cross member. i am using a 48, and it has taken some grinding. but it's working out.

Idaho Dave has it right. You should use a the spring that went with the later rearend, and can either grind a bit off the centre portion that fits into the rear crossmember (a 39-30 rear spring is about a quarter inch too wide to fit into a 34 crossmember - or modify the crossmember to widen it that quarter inch - that is what I did on my 33 coupe with a 40 rearend.

Thanks guys that there is the info that i needed, much appreciated :). I will get grinding on that that spring;)

I had a set of 34 axle spring mounts that i cut off the axle under my roadster as I had gone spring over but i ended up using them as the shock mounts

    Hi Bob,

Wee Brian sent the link to your build and i must admit you are fairly cracking on at a good rate, the car looks excellent even if it has too many windows. Wish i had your talent with the metal work, its going to be a real hotrod.

Like Brian says, i would like a rumage through your work shop too, lots of interesting stuff going on in the background, we are always looking for some where to stop off/visit on the way down to the swap meet, but keep in mind we do come on mass.

    Cheers

Well i haven't got that much done to be honest what with the shitty weather being snowed in on the days i go down to the unit, and also the fact that I have become a Grandad to a beautiful baby boy this week!!!!! and i'm loving it.

I got some work done though,When i used the coupe door tops and the 4 door bottoms where they lined up didn't if you catch my drift so just relief cut them and back together but it is one job out of the way

I also got the rear quarter patch panels in that I made
    [IMG]

and the not so good fitting lower panels in which seemed like an age to fit
    [IMG]

I then made the inner slam panel

and got the rear sheet metal all buttoned up with the inner panels i did earlier.

I had to repair the trunk hinge mounting area as i had to tear out the deck lid as it had seized solid, but at least its done and working correctly. All the doors shut nice and latch good, so does the screen. Body wise all thats left is to cut out all the crap below the rear window and repair /make the inner front door posts and deck lid then the body can come back off while I get on with the chassis, which is the next big step.

Congratulations grampa! Your work on the car is inspiring. Do you have another car your measuring from or are you doing this great work by eye ?
