Projects New project- Old hot rod 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chris, Mar 18, 2023.

  1. Hello all,

this is long winded, but here it goes. Over the past few years, I’ve had a couple 1940-41 Ford pickup projects. I love 40 Fords, both cars and trucks, and have seemed to have one around a lot of times. In a somewhat midlife crisis fog, I decided I should sell my current 1941 Ford pickup project and just buy a decent old 40/41 pickup. I began searching for one, but then thought “dang if I’m gonna step up, I want a coupe!”. I’ve had a a few 39 coupes as well, none ever on the road, and nice ones were always too much for me to afford. So now I’m looking for a coupe. A few weeks back, I mention to my friend John that is like to find a decent 40 coupe, and he said “oh my friend Paul is selling one. Old hot rod, lots done but needs finished”. He sent me this single pic and I knew it was it.

I call his friend Paul, and within a few days of pics back and forth, agree to buy it. I’m up in WA, the car was in SoCal at Circle City Hot Rods. Paul lives in the Bay Area, and agreed to haul it to his house so it was closer. This past Thursday, my dad and I bombed down and picked it up, and got home at 2am this morning after a non stop driving marathon.

so here it is- I know very little history, but it is a rust free 1940 Deluxe Coupe wearing a white paint job that was done sometime before the 1969 oil change sticker the door jam. Louvers, some chrome, and that neat old seat cover. It just screams high school
Hot rod- and that’s what I was after. It supposedly lived its whole life in Central Californian since new- but that’s just how the story was told to me. The engine/trans and complete drivetrain was gone through, dropped axle, and some speed equipment. It needs some finishes and fired/ran, tires, and other odds and ends. It’s exactly what I wanted- a really nice old coupe that needs some work but not a restoration.

Unloaded today, of course I had to mock it up.

    Stay tuned

  12. Wow, Chris, great acquisition!...You find all the cool stuff. If you do ever decide to paint it, that firewall color (maybe Folkstone Gray) would look fabulous. Have fun....Don.

Funny, before fully reading the story I looked at the pictures and thought "that shop looks familiar" (Jimmy is a super nice guy).
