I'd like to begin my new project by creating a scenario. Young man just out of the military (limited finances) and wanting to build a hot rod in the early 50s. Here is what I have at my disposal ...

Model A frame, shortened but found a rear spring crossmember. AA (truck) frame complete.
Model A front suspension, AA (truck) front suspension, and 36 Ford front suspension.
Model A running gear, complete. 47 Ford Delux running gear, complete (juice brakes!).
1939 flathead transmission. Also have bell housings to fit inline 6 (OHV) and Y-block.
    Have Merc (255), Ford (239), and inline 6 (223) engines. Y-blocks available.
1927 T cowl (rough), 30-31 A cowl (rougher), 27 Chev cowl (good shape).
30-31 complete A steering, complete AA (truck) steering.
30-31 A bucket (back half of Phaeton).

Being my long time buddies, what would we keep and build? Everything else would be taken to the next swap meet.

    Thanks!!

AA frame should be the stronger of the batch, flatty and trans. A or 36 axle. A cowl, A back half.
I'd shoot for something of an A bucket, just a T that's a little bigger.

  3. Pretty much what I would do. I prefer the 36 axle personally. I would shy away from the '6s they take too much room, I ran Y blocks when I was young and dumb and full of ***. Built chebbies and race Fords. LOL They were not available until '53 but if I were coming home from a war in the early '50 it would have been '54 already. So if you can lay your hands on a Y block that is a good choice, or ther flatty and the '39 ******.

The AA frame is a good platform for damned sure, if I had one that is what I would be using under my A sedan by the way.

Is the width and length of an AA frame the same as an A frame? Or will it require some cutting/rewelding?

Thanks for the input. Really want a 4-seat arrangement. Will need to build the body between the cowl and rear half.

From what I've gleaned so far, frame is much deeper and of thicker material. Front is very similar, but widens and longer for the flatbed typically used. Cutting and welding in of parts will be necessary to some extent.

well for 4 seat arrangement just use said recipe above and stretch it out to fit extra legs.
