  2. Nothing against aircooled here :D , but you have the wrong one
A proper air-cooled car has merely two cylinders, and drives the front wheels.
I mean, if you're going to eliminate some headaches (radiator), why not go all the way and eliminate as many as possible (window cranks, roof rot, starter worries [handcrank included], etc...) :p

  3. Here's some of my fleet. All of these are 4cyl. powered. Dean

I think she would have fun in it, give it a try. I do think you and **** should get a 2300 CC motor for it , I mean shouldnt all old flat 4 VW's be super loud and abnoxious?
P.S. Did you get that ford pickup too?

    Thanks Ryan.

I don't think this is really a VW thread. If the HAMB is like a virtual garage, this is just a conversation that a owner of a "raditional" 41 is having about a car that his wife just picked up. Didn't say he was gonna haul it into the garage and take over. Way I see it, he's just shootin the **** with others and fishing for info.

I had a rod that I built and drove and sold about 16 years ago. Also I've always {since 1973 } had at least 1,sometimes as many as 6 VW's. They are cheap, plentifull, easy as shi#&* to work on, and more dependable than most other vehicles on the road. I wish I still had my rod, and wish I could afford to build another but 3 kids and a mortgage have all but cancelled that idea. But I have my bug convertible , chopped 2", no roof, no windows, no carpets, 34 Ford bumpers narrowed ,stock 1600 dp, $3000. total investment, and since 1998 I drive it every day in the summer unless there's a downpour. I've even driven it when there's still snow on the ground. It's the MOST fun vehicle I've ever owned and the way I see it ,it's my budget version of a deuce roadster beater !

Brett what would my wife do with a 2300cc other than brake it every other day.... still waiting on the '35 cab to be dropped off, I was going to call the guy today and see where it is at.

I feel similarly about my bug. Though mine is lot milder for now, it's my practical alternative to about twenty other impractical cars I would like to be toying with. It cost $1200 and it's a driver.

I appreciate Ryan's at***ude about the thread. And I agree that the VW chat should be somewhat isolated. There's another post floating around - "Do you like VWs?" that really should be squashed. But maybe that's someone just trying to provoke a problem.

I also appreciate the swift and merciless justice that befalls NASCAR posts. Oh, if only Ryan could moderate the SPEED channel.

Nice car! In high school, a friend and I were in the the dune-buggy, VW thing. I bought a pc of **** 73 beetle for $125. The spring wouldn't return the brake pedal so someone had tied a rope on it. We used to run those things through the woods. Visualize a person trying to steer, shift gears, give it gas and use a rope to pull the brake off!!! That was the best $125 worth of entertainment ever. One time we got around 18" of snow. The back gl*** was broken out, so I loaded it full of cinder blocks and bricks until the rear bumper was almost touching the ground. It had bald tires but would go ANYWHERE!!!!! It was amazing where that thing would go!

My buddy had a pretty solid VW, we were running it through the woods, having a great time. About the time the gettin' was good, it stopped running. We looked at each other and said, "I smell something burning." My buddy jumped out and went to look. It had back fired through the carb and was burning. I couldn't hardly get out- you know how the doors stick. When I went back there I tried to blow it out. I ended up putting dirt down the carb to get it out......we never got it running again......

Oh, to be young and dumb........

I've had a couple dozen and love them. Probably the easiest, most fun car to own for the money. I agree on the motor, there's no reason NOT to go dual port. Heads are so cheap and easy to change, and the difference is well worth it. Unless you are going for a 100% resto, swap the heads.

I have to be the only guy who like the single port! they have more low end torque and less chances on an intake leak. I do run Dual carbs so I do have a dual port but for stock I love single ports. by the wat isnt this a hot rod site...hahahahahahaha

I would run a header or a more free flowing exhaust. It helps the engone a lot and free up some extra hp.

I agree, as for heat any VW publication has advertisments for electric heaters that are fairly reasonably priced and work a hell of alot better than the origional heater boxes.

I'll dig through them tonight if I get done swappin intakes off my roadster early enough so I can get it out the door on Sat.

Maybe get her an aftermarket heater too!

VW + Convertible + Colorado winter = cold angry wife!

My first car was an old 58 Bug, it was a project that my stepdad was working on, and he handed it down to me when I started driving.

I froze my *** on many winter mornings driving to school!

Also, did 62 have the non-syncro 1st gear (I dont remember)?

If so, maybe update the transaxle while your at it. I'll make it a little easier to drive.

When did VW change to 12volt? Do you have to update all the wiring too? I guess you can run the 1600cc motor, but at least get the super eardrum busting stinger pipe?

look at the pics Brett.... there is no wiring at all have to order me up a kit tomarrow, so yes it will be 12 volt.... I don't think the stinger pipe would fit the car very well (I hope you are kidding:rolleyes: )

If I remember right they didn't switch until 67' or was that the first year of sealed beams, or was it both? Hell it's been awhile, but my bus had 6v, I changed all the lightes and what not but left the starter 6v. Fired right up everytime(just dont hold the switch too long :D). Come to think of it my 34 Ford is the same way. Everybody said its gonna burn up, but my pop said "well when it does then I'll change it" Its been that way for 20yrs now.

You could always go big and put a 5700cc motor in it like this guy did. He even put the engine in the wrong end.. weird!

Would it be more traditional if he'd put a tri-powered Olds 331 in it instead of SBC?

I have never had a 6v starter go out on me after switching to 12v... the guy I use for rebuilding starters says he won't even rebuild them for me because he dosn't want to waste my money.... he says just don't crank it for an extended amount of time

It should be easy to wire up then, sorry I couldnt tell all the wiring was missing in the pictures. I do like the stinger pipes but they dont look stock if thats what you want.

Here's what I'm working on right now. Yeah yeah I know it's not a Kustom or hot rod, but it my wife's and she's not a fat rock-a-billy chick so it should be perfect for her. Here are pics of before and right now. I need to put it back together so I can get to work on my 50 Shoebox.

That's soooo cool, she deserves it. I'll bet she has been driving the wheels off it, right?
