So I had my old front seat reupholstered a while back. I wasn't crazy about it and kind of regretted using the old seat frames with the tired old springs. Today my dad and I just picked up his seats and wow, what a difference. The difference was, his seat frames are brand new Glide Engineering. Now I'm really contemplating getting new seat frames. I'm just wondering if the seat frames would be the same as my original? I would like to use the upholstery from the original seat frame, and keep the same look as the old seat. Does anyone on here have 46-48 Ford Glide Engineering seats? How close to the original seat frame shape are they? Does another company make more accurate seat frames?
i believe the two seats are different enough that your existing upholstery will not fit without some modification from their website: Our frames are not reproductions of the original seat frames. All of our frames are Glide’s designed. ORIGINAL COVERS AND FOAM WILL NOT FIT OUR FRAMES
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I'm thinking enough hard foam can be added to make it work, maybe. If nothing else, I'll just get a whole new seat done. The difference in comfort was outrageous, and I'm going on a road trip in a couple of months. Comfortable seats will make a world of difference!
take the seat covers off and throw away the stock springs! Build a new base out of plywood or metal to support a foam base which is the same height as the original seat was. you can use different densities of foam to meet your comfort requirements and use an electric carving knife to shape the foam. you can also do the seat back with foam. Add seat heaters or lumbar support to suit and then reinstall the seat covers! easy!!
