Back before there was a traditional hot rod web site and before everybody owned a computer I had a black 40 Ford sedan with black wheels and it stayed the same for a very long time,,but I grew tired of all black,, With that said,,I like the idea of the 60's look with the ET's. HRP
What about the wheel and tire combo off the McMullen Roadster? 15-inch American's polished outer lip wrapped in 5.60-15 & 7.50-15 Firestone Blackwalls Image courtesy of Street Rodder magazine Image courtesy of Street Rodder magazine
Great looking car just the way it is but I understand the need/want to make a change. I think if it were mine I'd go with the all black steel wheel blackwall look in 17's and 16's w/ tall bias plys. I went to bias plys on my '32 a couple of years ago after radials for over 8 years and talk about deja vu. I had totally forgotten the difference in ride and the need for a driving style change. You've got to pay attention with the bias plys and I had kinda forgotten that with so many years with radials on everything I own. Frank
Narrowing things down in my mind. The Roadster has a small block with a stick, full length headers. I plan on giving the motor more of a late 60's look (Early LT1 Valve covers), and eventually getting the headers coated white, redo the exhaust with cutouts. This is one of my all time favorite 32's build by Dave Lane. I really like this combo and it uses the same rubber as I have now. On the practical side this would set-up goes down the road nice. Not really traditional 60's more of a early 70's Lobeck look. I really dig this tire set-up below. These are original Americans, but I think I could pull off a similar look with ET cl***ic V's, polished. I guess I would just have to wait out the rain....... Here's a green deuce with black steelies and top. Pretty damn cool. I was thinking caps and no trim rings (since my wheels would have dual bolt patterns)
You know that would work too. I always thought rears were a little too small, should be taller. Those are probably 6's and 7's by the looks.
I like the look of this car alot, has anyone blasted and painted hub caps and left the Ford logo polished?
I am a firm believer in dating the car, I say steelie's or the original coal iron finish torque thrust.... even polished D's will look nice on a shiney rod if you need them for the disc brake clearance...just my 2 cents worth.
Changing the wheel / tire combo changes the whole at***ude of the car. I think Excelcior's, and Black wires would look killer too. No matter what you put on that baby, it'll look right. Good luck.
I agree with you on the Roadster that Dave Lane built. It has the Hot Rod look and it may not be for this board but it is an accepted look of roadsters every where. i have added my wheel choice at the bottom.
I voted ET Fueler 16X10 and Vintique G***er Alloy 15X4. (I would like full fenders added with those too.)
If you are really SERIOUS about going after a mid-late sixties look, I would think about re-evaluating the 4" front rim width. I am very big on looking at period pics, rather than pics of modern interpretations of "period" cars, almost all of the sixties era street driven rods with americans ran 6" front rims with 5.50-6.00x15's stretched over them. The attached pics are cars ranging from '64-'67. When I see 4" americans on the front, I immediately think "modern car trying to look sixties" not sixties car.
16" steelies in a contrasting color or chrome. The car looks like dark green. I would have gone with a tan top, tan interior and tan steelies. 10" wide anything looks too street roddie
Steelies have been done to death lately. You stated you want a late 60' vibe and are going with that engine detail, then it's gotta be a Mag wheel!
My opinion: Tires and Wheels are thee thing that will make or break a car. If you want a traditional look, hands down, go with bias plies. They fit the era. If you want to run radials on a car that rides better, and kind of looks old, then buy a PT Cruiser! haha Not directed at you Nuroadsir, just saying in general. Your car will have a whole different at***ude with 16's
Well, I may end up with two sets, time will tell. The first set will definately be 16X11 polished ETIII's and 15X4 polished Halibrands. Tri-Deuce-****y shot me a good deal on the wheels off the Dave Lane built red roadster posted above. I am also looking at set of bias plys and steelies to run as well to change up the look from time to time.
I voted black steelies; but I would do them with 15" Merc wheels and Merc caps, definitely not with 10" wide rims, but maybe 7" wide. ...and if you drive it for longer trips, nothing wrong with radials.
Got a little problem to work out. I got the wheels below but, he was incorrect on the bolt circle. It's cool and he'll make it right with me, but now its time to rethink. Lots of good input here guys. ET cl***ic V's polished with radirs and 500-16's? ET cl***ic V's unpolished and firestone bias plys 16" steelies green or black with firestones and or firestone dirt track tires
Will post up some pics in a few weeks, going for more of a 60's look. Went with: 15X5 Polished American Torq Thrust Originals with 5.60-15 Firestones blackwalls on the front. 15X8.5 Polished American Torq Thrust Originals with Hurst 30-10-15's blackwall cheaterslick.
The way things are going I may not have wheels for some time. So after buying a set of used wheels and not having them work out (see above post and TDV was absolutely great about making it right!) , and to top it off Coker Firestone 145R15's are still on back order I decided to switch gears. So then I find out the "109" polished American TT0's have been discontinued and those advertising yet have singles or wrong bolt circles etc. Today I went back to ETIII and ordered polished 5 spokes 15 X 5 and 15 X 8's. The Firestone 5.60-15's are showing a mid Feb ship date. Codys cheater slicks are on track to ship this week! Maybe by the end of February it will be back on all fours!
