    @KIRK! & @seret ... I can't believe I missed this thread!

I'm very much aware of the "Touch of Glass" #127 J-class streamliner ... it was built and campaigned by Dennis Sapp & Chuck Salmen.

I've got a bunch of pics of it on the Salt in the late '80s ... I posted two of them last November in the motorcycle engined cars thread (click HERE).

Give me a few minutes ... and I'll post some more pics / info for you.

    AWESOME!!!!!

Fire. Oops. I guess that's why they painted it for the next year.

I wish we had the chassis.

1989 was the last year that Chuck & Denny ran the car ... It had become obvious that the pancake-style (flat & short) 'liner was never gonna get them over the 204 MPH mark required to put them in the record books (I believe the top speed the car ever attained was ~196 mph).

In 1988, Jim Burkdoll's #31 "Pink Thunder" needle-style (long & narrow) 'liner had set the J/GS record at 203.719 MPH with a 748cc Yamaha ... In 1989, Burkdoll ran in the K/GS class (with a smaller Yamaha) and went even faster! ... Another needle-style J/GS, the "Montana Magic", was also consistently running over 200 MPH with a 678 cc Rotax snowmobile engine.

The writing was pretty much on the wall ... and Chuck really wanted to get in the 2-Club ... so he built the $um Fun '34 Bonneville Roadster:

    SalmenRacing (with copyright).jpg
Salmen Racing (Chuck, Frank & Martha) ...
Current Records: AA Unblown Fuel Roadster (263.781 mph, Frank in 2003) and AA Unblown Gas Roadster (258.924 mph, Chuck in 2002)

Kirk & Matt ... PM sent!

  6. Only ONE motor for the salt can be used, 90* V Twin desmodromic valve drive Ducati!! Slap a couple of nice huffers on it and 250 here you come!
Or if you want to stay new, de-stroke a 848 Testastretta.
Not to mention that awesome sound a Duc would make tear****ing down the salt.

    I think I'm in love.

    Doc.

PS, For a head blister look to the original 777 streamliner or even the SoCal tank when it got a canopy, even such a small blister that only half your noggin sticks up and you look along the top of the front deck. Less frontal area is your friend!
Now how you gonna put a push bar on the leigon special?

Those things are awsome! Anything that can scare the bejesus out of you and make you wonder just what the hell you are doing inside of there gets my blood pumping. I've never been to bonneville but seeing stuff like this makes me realize how much i have missed. I concentrated on drag racing and i know how it feels when they lower a funnycar body down and there is just you and that engine in there thumping away. Getting into one of those little streamliners, wearing it actually, is a whole level of scarry. Looking out between your feet at 3-4" off the ground, near 200mph, the fear would be so intense that you'd be laughing your**** off the whole way and giddy for the next couple days. I don't know what kind of drug your body releases in that situation but science has never captured it thats for sure.

  10. Guess it wouldn't hurt to be into "water sports"

Actually anything on the salt above about 130 it may not hurt to have some sort of a catch can. :D

There are a lot of very strong scooters motors @ 750 CC or less.
We looked at a 3 cylinder snow mobile motor that was about 750 cc that made over 100 hp back in the '70s. Snow mobile may be a good place for you to look.

BTW Breedlove or not it is a way cool project. And I'm pretty jaded.

Stock 750 sport bikes are putting out 120-140hp to the wheels right off the showroom floor. Superbike class racers are looking at closer to 180-210. Might be enough...

    Matt & Kirk,
Let me be the first to play the name game for this one and recommend "Touch my****" as atribute to the original... Looks like it will be fun... (the car not touching either of your****es ;))

Hemi32 has sent me a TON of useful info on it, so maybe we'll be able to track it down. It would be awesome to find plans too.

Actually, I wasn't super into the Breedlove possibility. The history emerging is WAY cooler!

  17. so 2 questions...

what is the current 750 record for this thing?

and what is the current 750 record for a stock bodied car?

  18. How in the hell do you find the time to do all the***** you do? There must be 30 or 40 hour days out there on the west coast. I'll just sit back and watch in awe.
    Later,
    Dick

The class is J Gas Streamliner. The current record is 219mph and was set in 1990. We're thinking that motorcycle engine technology has advanced a lot in 20 years, so we may have a shot. Of course the design of the body is the other possible limitation.

Someone said snowmobile. There's a lot to be said for that these days. Yamaha has a 3cyl 4 stroke sled motor that makes real good power, I believe it's in the 700cc range. They spin pretty high RPM and the powerband is quite linear. Could be the way home. Also when you consider the salvage aspect of sleds it may be user friendly from a $$$$ point of view. Yeah there's plenty of crotch-rocket attrition too, and maybe easier to attain in CA. Don't rule out the possibility of a 2 stroke Rotax 700 triple. Close to 175-180HP in race trim, naturally aspirated, very linear and narrow powerband. Might need a CVT system to run it right. If you go Rotax talk to Mark Herek in MI. Find him through US-27 Motorsports in St. Johns, MI.

They did a Rotax triple in a 4 wheeler a few years ago for the sand. There were 500ci nitroused Jeep CJs that couldn't come anywhere close in 300'. Estimate was in the range of 250+ HP with that one.***** you guys got me all giddy buildin it in my head and it ain't mine!!

Actually the current record in J Unblown Gas Streamliner (J/GS) is 215.632 MPH ... a two-way average of 219 MPH is about what you guys would have to run to set a new J/GS record @ Bonneville.

The current record in J Unblown Fuel Streamliner (J/FS) is 207.660 MPH ... set by Bill Tally in the Burkdoll 'Liner at Speed Week '90 ... so a ~210 MPH two-way average would put the Seret-Jones 'Liner in the record books.

You might also consider running it in the K engine class (30 ci / 500 cc or smaller) ... the current K Unblown Fuel Streamliner (K/FS) record is 180.619 MPH (set in '07 by John Wright) ... the current K Unblown Gas Streamliner (K/GS) record is 202.424 MPH (set in '89 by Jim Burkdoll).

Thought a 215.633 two-way average would set a new record?

Is there a certain percentage that you have to beat the old record by?

  28. Well, it all "depends"...

I'm sure someone more familiar with the SCTA-BNI rules (Beef Stew, Dan Warner, Dynoroom, RichFox, Rich Venza, etc.) will correct me if I'm wrong ... but I'm pretty sure that a new record has to be at least 1% faster ... or maybe the 1% rule only applies to qualifying for a record run ... now you have me 2nd guessing myself!
