I don't remember seeing any 1% rule in the SCTA-BNI rule books. I thought that was just an FIA requirement.

So much thanks go to Hemi32, who gave Kirk and I. A ton of info on the liner and a great lead on the car, Chuck salmen’s phone number!! I called him but he didn’t have much info on it so he gave me Dennis Sapp’s number the builder of the car. He spoke with me for a good 15 to 20 minutes recalling his old streamliner,
He gave some very helpful info on the car.
Here are some of the random facts I franticly wrote down as he spoke.
The chassis was built by him in the 60’s it ran a crossly front axle and spring, the rear end was a 1.5” go cart axle, it had vw bug drums welded to the axle and it used pillow blocks with locking collars to affix the axle to the frame, he said that under 150 mph the rigid rear end caused the car to shake so bad you couldn’t read your gauges. After 150 it would smooth out and you could watch the front of the car***** down an inch. He told me that in 1980 he originally ran a Crossly engine but blew it up then he went to the junkyard and bought a 750cc Honda engine. He told me that they could never make a return run if they ran over 190mph because the pistons kept melting, he also said that redline on the motor was about 8500 rpm but they ran it about 11500rpm.
The first time they ran it didn’t have the rudder and spun out at el mirage, they then built the rudder out of balsa wood and fiberglass, they also added 100 lbs of weight behind the engine and raked the front of the car.
The bad news is that the cars wheelbase is only 72” during there time campaigning the car the minimum wheelbase rules changed to 80” but no one ever checked it.
He then took my number wished us luck and said he would put some photos of the chassis together and send them to us.

The Costella- Yacoucci liner went 360+ with a 1260cc, I think, motor. That got Ricks attention. I don't think you need to break a BNI record by 1%.

your average speed must be at least .001 mph over the existing record to set a new record.

mr. fox says it best.... leave it to someone who has never done it to tell you how easy it is. those records are 20+ years old for a reason. not saying that you can't or won't get them but don't think it's going to be easy by any means.

i'm interested in seeing what the chassis looks like.

Is that new, as in the last 2 years? I think the rule book we are looking at is 2 years old and it says the minimum for the class is 80".

It definitely won't be easy and we hope it isn't. What fun would it be if it was?

Matt & Kirk ... It's been my pleasure helping you guys figure out the history of your 'Liner project.

I hope you realize that we will expect a full build thread on this one too! ... just be careful to not disclose any of your "Speed Secrets" ... the competition is always watching! ;)

It's been my experience:... you'll need a speed blister twice the size of the one you put in for your TESTACLES or you wont be able to see over them !!!
LOL anyone who lays down feet 1st @ 200mph has gotta walk funny. The size of melons I tell ya... Melons
