Thinking about ordering one of the new Stromberg 97 carbs. I have a 59AB flathead v8 and hoped a new carb would help with performance. I have an old Stromberg 97 on now. Do they come ready to bolt on and use? I still have pull choke and pull throttle and wondered if I would have any connection problems. I would like to hear from someone that has made the swap and know of any problems that I might avoid. I know the new one is expensive but is it worth it? What is best source for the new one? Thanks

  2. I switched out the rebuilt 94 carb on my 40’s flathead with a new 97 from Clive at Stromberg England (NOT the one from Speedway!). Everything hooked up. It fired off instantly and only required an idle rpm adjustment. Definitely an improvement.

Thanks for your information. Shipping from England must be a little high. I will check on it.

  5. Uncle Max is a dealer for The English Stromberg 97 carburetor. He has them in stock so you don't have to worry about the shipping cost from England. Why not just buy a re-built original Stromberg 97 from Uncle Max. He is probably the best person in the USA to re-build original Stromberg carburetors

I bought 3 of those English 97's from Clive, sent him my paint code for the car and he painted them to match. 5 years later the paint is wrinkling on the carbs from fuel leaks around the bowl screws and fuel inlets so I called to ask if he he would sell me 3 chrome bodies and I would swap out the internals. He said his chrome was so bad they are going to stop selling them, but he did offer to repaint 3 new bodies with a new paint process they are now using and send them to Uncle Max. This winter I will remove the carbs and ship them to Uncle Max so he can swap out the bits and pieces. And get this, under warranty! Yeah, I'm not pay for it.

Where should you buy your carbs? Re-read read this post. Clive and Uncle Max, as hot rodders we are both fortunate and blessed to have them!
