I purchased a tach for my polara. I can't decide if I want it on the side (as pictured below), or straight up dead center top on the steering column. In the pic, its not blocking any other gauge. On the top center, it will block the odometer and kinda stand out. Opinions??

  2. The 'let's accessorize it' crowd put on the side of the column, the street racers put it on top, the real racers screwed it to the top of the dash! LOL!

When I can pull it off I put mine on the dash with a soda cup from my favorite drive in stuck over the back of it. That said a tach is not of much value if you can't see it so I am going to vote for up top on the column, if on the dash or hung from the top of the windshield won't work for you.

if you're not really going to use it, not really going to see it easily when it counts, then what's the point- put it straight up or on the dash. -rick

I haven't had a fuel gauge that worked in ages, so I guess seeing the odometer might be pretty important to me. I guess that being the case I might want it over to the side. Or I could just fix my fuel gauge. :D

Is fixing your fuel gauge traditional? I guess that depends on how long it's been broken :)

My buddy (a drag racer) always said "if you have time to watch a tachometer, your car is too slow".

  8. LOL or you shift too slow. :D

I have a tendency to drive my cars by the tach instead of the speedo, but when I am getting busy I am usually trying so hard to not bang into something that the tach is the last thing I am looking for. :D

If you want to use it, read it while banging gears. Mount it on the dash in sight while doing so. If you just want a tach cuz its cool put it anywhere you want.

  10. i say the tach is for setting timing. if you are really racing this car put it were you want. you shouldn't be looking at it going down the track. the hot set up is a shift light small or large mounted dead center of you. mount it at the chrome strip at the windshield. you never have to take your eyes off the road or track. its so simple. it lights up you shift.

  13. As has already been said...if not on the dash, then top center.

If you are going to use it, you need to be able to see it.

PnB, just top up with fuel every three days! ;)

I put mine on the side like you show. Since my speedo is 20 percent slow I use the tach a lot for speed and it is convinent for me there. Got to get the right speedo gear in it.

  15. But its only 25 hours from my house you yours, I may run out of gas before I get there. Guess I better buy AAA :D

I ended up with mounting it as pictured. My fuel gauge is currently in operative so I am using my odometer until the fuel gauge issue is solved (possible bad ground). I use my tach so I can gauge how my vehicle is running, shifting, etc. on the side where I mounted it, it's not hidden or obscured by the steering wheel as some are ***uming.
