I recent bought a 54’ Mercury and have a dumb question. I’ve been looking at fender skirts on ebay and some are flush and some are outside mount. The ones that came with the car are fiberglass and looks like a real bitch to mount and appears to be flush. IDK but if I counts get a few recommendations I’d appreciate it. Thanks
Well fender skirts don't make an otherwise Stock car a Custom being they were factory options at the time. That said I like the flush mounts being they cause no damage to the painted surface like outside mount skirts do.
Yup, in order to be a REAL custom there needs to be body modifications, at the very least nosed and decked and lowered....
I don't know Anthony, camera angles can be a little deceiving but looking at the tire to wheel opening it looks to be sitting pretty good.
When you think about the massive amount of work it takes to make Flush Mounts where the stock outside mounts were I think the Flush mounts look far more Custom than the other. To bad the Factory did it first.
It’s just gonna be a cheap cruiser. Most likely strip all the trim and put a budget paint and interior in it.

The overlay ones tend to rub against the paint and eventually wear through it. The factory flush fit skirts aren't nearly as tall as these, they only fill in the quarter down to the "bump", where as these go past that, but are still flush fitting and are steel. Keep in mind, it's already tough to get a wider tire under these cars, and skirts aren't going to help your clearance. But if you're running wheel covers and 6.70-15 bias tires you won't have any issues.
I would really like to see some pictures of the flush and outside mount. Thanks for all the input. I kinda tried to put these fiberglass ones in and they fit pretty snug actually. I’d imagine with paint they will need some kinda weather strip which may need some love then. I’ll have more questions when I shave the door handles and trunk junk thanks
Also worth mentioning if you're new to 52-54 Fords and Mercurys as well, is go and oil every pivot point on your hood hinges, and be real careful as you raise and lower your hood. The hood hinges on these cars are really expensive and a pain in the butt to replace, and they're also known to bind up and break. If you've got a good set, you'll want to keep it that way. Remember that the bolts that go into the hood are all pivot points as well as the rivets on the hinges themselves.
