Hi, Cory here. I have a 1956 Customline 223 with 3speed manual. I have removed the 223. I have a 289 that I had planned on putting in it, but these week I have come across a 292 Y block for a reasonable price. It is out of a pickup, does anyone know if this would just bolt right up to the 3 speed that is currently in the car? If so I figure this will save me from having to change transmissions and drive shaft like I was going to have to do with the 289 swap. Thanks for any advice.

It should bolt up to a sedan bellhousing with no issues. The only downside may be the gearing as six cylinders generally have a different 1st and 2nd gear ratio.
It would probably be a better idea to get the correct box for the 292. The next issue may be the final drive ratio but that is also easily rectified. The tailshaft will be the same throughout.
The good thing about putting the y block in is that you will still be able to drive it even if it is not exactly right while you sort gear ratios.
I am one of those that like the y block but have had Customlines in the past with later engines and boxes so it is really up to you.
    Regards

Just to add a little more, you will need to use a sedan bellhousing as the pickup engines bellhousing is used as an engine side mount. You will also need a different front engine steady rest as this is also different on the pickup. These shouldn't be hard to find. The clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearings should all be interchangeable. If the pickup comes with an 11" clutch I would use that in preference to the 10" from the 6 cylinder, though that will still be Ok. All in all a fairly easy swap.
    Regards

Another welcome from So Cal. I always like to put newer drive trains in my cars as I use them as daily drivers.

If your Y-block truck motor donor has a rear sump oil pan you will need a p***enger car front sump pan and pickup. One of our members Rocky aka dragonknucks has been thru the swap using a truck 292 there are more issues, you should look Him up and send Him a pm.
