Greetings from east central Illinois, been lurking on here reading the posts from quite some time. I love this forum, best on the net in my opinion. Decided to join. My current project is a 1964 Dodge Polara. I bought it about 25 years ago, to use as a beater. 318 Polly with a push ****on torque flight. I sold it to a friend back in 97. And he called and asked if I wanted it back. I jumped on it sight unseen. (I should have looked at it first). The car needs a LOT of work, it has been sitting for 10 years, and I think ****s were living in it. But it was only $600, that's what I sold it to him for, and what he sold it back to me. My plan is to pull the entire drive train and replace the rear end with a 9" ford, a 500 cube Indy head stroker, and a bullet proof torque flight from A&A Transmission in Indy. I want the car to have that 60's street racer vibe. So I am going to go with Rocket Wheels, and as much vintage stuff as I can find. Sun Tach, Moon Metal Flake steering wheel, etc. I want it to be a period correct as possible, but still run hard as it might see some NS/S time. I will get some photos up when I get the car back from North Carolina in November. The avatar is not my car, but it represents it pretty well. Anyone need a 318 polly with a push ****on torque flight? Cheap!
Welcome from washington state! I have to ask, why ditch the 8 3/4 for a 9"? That 8 3/4 is about as bullet proof as they come... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
A couple of reasons, the 8 3/4 in the 64 is a tapered axle unit. It is not as strong as the later versions, it is a pain in the *** to pull the axles, and I don't know of anyone who makes any after market performance axles for it. I hope to make about 700 HP with this combo, and it will be drag raced. The obvious choice is the Dana 60. But it is heavy and to build a light weight one will cost some serious coin. I also can't swap a gear set out quickly like I can with a Ford 9" or 8 3/4. After doing plenty of research I have come to the conclusion that the Ford has a way better gear and axle selection available. Plus it is a little stronger. I would love to keep it 100% Mopar, but I am trying to keep this thing on budget. I go to the track, and look at the Super Stock and NS/S cars, and virtually everyone I see is ether running a Dana, or a Ford 9". Its just simple economics.
Ahhhh excellent points! I didnt know it was going to be a full on race car, so yes a dana 60 or a 9" are the obvious choices. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
