I began with a 31 coupe in 1968 that somehow got transformed into a Slant Window 31 (bought a better non-rusted body for $75) that I finally drove in 1972. All the good stuff of the time was there: 327 4 speed, 57 type chev rear, 5.13 posi, dual cross ram, 37 tube axle, econoline spindles, hairpins. No one told me how or what to do I just put pieces together. Built the car for $2500. Had to modify the car when I set it down from a wheelstand on Woodward & bent the hairpins, not a happy or controlled drive home. Fixed it & drove around Metro Detroit until 1977. Made Memphis Nats. in 1975 in it. Put it away at that point & raised a son on my own. He now has a clean 59 T bird. 28 years later after 20+ cars bought & sold, all built before 1967, I retired & moved to Oregon. Brought 8 cars with me. Movin/on from one state to another 50+ hr workweek to retirement, snow to warm weather, no driving rod to one on the road by this September.Been reading the thread about speed equip. fetishes & I do have some non-fulfilled/lurking that will grow in future years. I like all of the help shown here and the attitude of nothing is right, just make it safe. I found out about a club near here in Crescent City Ca. but they tend to be a car club & not traditional rodders. I'll participate there, but the idea & process of doing it yourself & developing your own style of car is who I am. I especially like the threads about building your own tools/equipment. I'll be back in Mi for Billetproof.
