Hey everybody, I'm taking possession of a new to me 53 Lincoln Capri and I know it needs a trunk emblem/lock surround and I am looking for a set of steelie 53ish Ford, Merc, Lincoln wheels for it. Any****istance would be greatly appreciated. This is my first early Ford car, my dad bought a 53 Ford Customline when i was a little kid and it got me into these cars and i finally found one decent enough for me. Will post pictures as soon as I get it. And shoot me a message if anyone has any parts they would be willing to part with. Thanks!
Looking forward to the pictures. I’ve had a soft spot for those as my Dad had a 54 he bought in 55, the first car I clearly remember. This a running/driving car? b-ster on here (down in Sierra Vista,AZ) just got the engine and hydro back in his 54. He might have some leads on part suppliers. Be worth a PM. Putting your general location in would possible help too.
I have a 55, these are awesome cars. Prepare yourself. ***** is hard to find and expensive. The 53 Ford/Merc wheels don't fit the Lincolns.
Bolt pattern should be big ford. Truck wheels from 1/2 tons should work up to the mid 90s. I’ve got a set from a 51 Merc
@ major clubs : Lincoln& Continental Owners Club(LCOC) a national club. Road Race Lincoln Club(Specifically for these years). Parts : Rock Auto has some. PLEASE DON'T chop off the front suspension just to put a Mustang II in its place : although a bit more expensive, that Dbl wishbone that's there from the factory is one of the strongest & when aligned properly, one of the best handling out there! Sure, go disc brakes, there are several ways, although the drums are pretty good from the factory. Don't be afraid to pm others, ask questions, whatever ! These are very comfortable high speed road cars : After all they were class winners in the Carrera Panamerica Races (Look them up), some 1900 miles in Mexico in the early '50s over no better than secondary roads at speeds often over 100mph
Thanks for the info! I'm going to need a set of rollers for now, it has two of the original wheels as far as I know.
That's cool! unfortunately it is not running/driving, but its all original and everything is there currently so it should run pretty easy. And thanks for the parts lead!
Definitely keeping the original suspension for as long as I can. Anybody know what kind of brakes will go onto the stock spindle? I still don't have the car yet so I don't know what shape the brakes are in yet but I just want to make sure my research is done for the most part before I get it and start working on it.
Well it's here! The floor is pretty rusty so i need to find patch panels, but it came with a spare 317 that i may use. Last tag on the Colorado plate says 1958 (which i don't think is accurate to when parked) and until last week it hadn't been****led since 1961 so i have no idea how long it's been off the road. Wiring is pretty crunchy so i gotta figure that out too. If anybody has any pointers i'll listen. Gonna try and dive into it this weekend hopefully.
Looks like you have the engine and transmission for it. Freshen up the engine and transmission, then get it running. I have a 54 Capri, with some spare parts. Let me know if you need anything.
its got the original engine and trans in it still, it came with a spare! but I do need a trunk emblem/lock cylinder so i can actually latch it if you have one or know anyone who does.
You might consider adding at least a vague location of you and the car to your user profile information. There may be HAMB members that live nearby who may be able to provide****istance.
I don’t trust my memory anymore, so neither should you. Got to the Lincoln sites above and see what you find. One thing I think I remember reading was that the front ball joints were about a large and tough as any in a passenger car. But almost unobtainable now. So an external cleaning and lubing them to check them should be on your list when you get to the front end. Part for the engine are out there, but it’ll take a bit to find some of them. The hydro is a great transmission, but I think it took b_ster a year to find some who could work on it and finally get it back. Great ride, well worth some time and effort.
Welcome to the Land of Lincolns. Picked up a 55 just about a year ago. Motor was locked up and full of acorns, picked up a rebuilt 57 Lincoln 368 a month or so ago, blew the front end off to freshen up the engine bay and it has turned into while I am in here I might as well do this project. First find yourself the Chassis and Body manuals and start searching eBay with the NOS part numbers. Also pick up an interchange manual although not much from Ford or Mercury interchange. The Lincoln Y block is it's own animal, only interchange with Ford Y Block is oil pump, distributor with the correct gear and spin on oil filter adapter. For parts check out https://www.lincolnoldparts.com/ https://markii.com/ Wiring get ready and hold onto your wallet, there are a couple specialty shops that make authentic harnesses and full set is in the 5-6k range. I am converting mine to 12 volt and will use a universal harness to get started and make my own power window, seat and rear seat harnesses. Brakes Wheel cylinders, shoes, hoses are readily available, if you have manual brake master cylinder is cheap, if it's the power brake treadlevac those can get expensive. Is it all worth it, yes it is and you will probably have the only 53 Lincoln at the car show.
