hey, im new to the board. Im 18 and from minnesota, and own a 1960 International pickup. I have always loved old cars, especially not so common ones such as International, PAckard, Hudson, some dodge, but I am also a hgue chevy fan at heart. I love metal working, and will be working as an apprentice for my uncle this summer in his machine shop. (cant wait to start usin lathes and mills.) I am now finished with the pickup and am buying a 1962 440 4dr.(even tho it runs a slant 6, weird huh?) I was wondering what is the best way to lower this car, and if anyone has a few cool things for sale to add to it ( Shrunken heads, Mexican Blankets, knobs, steel wheels, wide whites etc.) Im lookin to take it in the direction of lowering bout 2 inches, flat black, red steelies wrapped in wide whites with some chrome lugnuts, shaved trim, retro interior......basically just a slick mild custom to run around in. any suggestions welcome. P.S. Do any of you guys have or know of any 318s, 360s, or other mopar motors for sale. Hemi's too. thanks for the help
Welcome. You're about to hear this several dozen times, but here goes...paint it ANYTHING OTHER THAN flat black with red wheels! PLEASE! There are sooooo many cool color combos to choose from. Go to the paint store and look through the paint chip books. Even if you run the flat black...pick a different wheel/trim color!!! PLEASE! It's a sixties car...think metallic or candy or 'flake or even just another color besides RED. Metal colors, like copper, bronze, silver, gold, etc. would look cool.
hey thanks for the help man, i can totally understand your view. Another thing I was thinkin about was a suede blue or other dark color (Im a huge fan of suede) maybe a metal frake roof, and some RAT FINK GREEN ( a color I saw on the net one day, really rad) rims with chrome bullets and lugnuts. I am also a big fan of scallops and fades.. thanks for helping me be open to other options. Also...do u think this car would be lame as a Kustom?.....I do, but I just wanted to know what some others thought. thanks again........more suggestions plz
Barnett--> agree. Flat Black 60. Welcome to the board. First off it is good to hear you are going to learn a trade in machining. I took some classes while I went to college and I really enjoyed them. Kinda wish I could go back some day and get an engineering degree of some sorts. Ah but I digress... Okay the car that you need help with,, are you trying to make it a rolling Hot Topic? Because that is where you will find most of your bolt on goodies. If not there I know Walmart has some of that stuff. Now I am not ridiculing you in any way and in no way is my opinion worth two shits. You asked for help and you deserve it because you are the next generation to carry the torch. How familiar are you with true traditional Hot Rods and 60's customs? Research man Research!!! Check out some of the cars that are on this site http://www.daign.com/hamb/index.htm Lots of great reference and ideas that you can apply to your car without it becoming too "Kitchy" ... No car is a lame custom. It is all in the execution. Some will need more work than others sure, but it is all how it is built. Don't limit yourself just because you think the car is lame. Your car can become a test bed to apply your new knowledge of machining to. Good luck have fun. Hey what part of Minnesota are you from? I am originally from Welch/Red Wing. Justin
hey man, thanks for the help, not all criticizm is bad. thanks for the website and the encouragement. I will definately research. keep em comin thanks again Im from Kelliher, like 3 hours north of there, but have family there.
I totally agree with the no flat black/ red steel thing. Far too much of that. No your car would not be lame as a kustom. Off beat, yes, but since that's what you dig, go for it! Someone has to build it first no matter what it is and the cool thing about 1-1 models is that they can always be changed if you do something you're not happy with. Metallic gold with a white pearl top just came to mind for color, explore the possibilities as there are infinite ideas out there. Go off and post pics!
Lets see a pic. of the 62...it'll be easier to visualize what'll work and what won't...there's lots of good photo shop guys on here.
I disagree with those other dudes, if you want to paint it flat black with red steelies, go ahead, its your car, but realize that everyone that's too cool is gonna let you know how "played out" it is. Barnett is more that correct, there are a billion rad color combos, but for someone who isn't really into painting, black primer is a quick fix. the main thing is, just do what you want, if black with red wheels, spider caps, shruken heads and mexican blankets are what make you think "kustom" go ahead...but then again, what do I know, i drive a stupidbaker... good luck and welcome aboard
