psssstttttt...don't mention small block chevys in the same breath as anything mopar-ish... it causes all kinds of wierd stuff...hives...frothing at the mouth... ugly words... insults galore...you get the picture

NOW, with all that said...GO FOR IT. Sounds like a real plan to me! If I remember right, isn't it called a Suburban?

    ooooppsss....there I go...mentioning a chevy-sounding word....

  4. There are 3 of those in a junkyard near me....too far gone to restore though. Nice score!

Why call it a "rat". Why build it as one. That thing is too nice not to to do something good with it. And giving it the "rat" treatment aint it.

  9. Because the title is in his name and he can call it or do whatever he wants.

Smokin' Joe is right, both Dodge and Plymouth also used the suburban name tag alot in the late 40's and early 50's.

Cool toy, make sure to give us alot more pics.

Yea right frankie, but kustombypook doesnt have to ask for your permission to give his opinion. I also hate the term "rat rod" and its "implications".

Why dont you just paint the car other than flat black and call it a hot rod ? You might end up with something original.

what do i think? i think you're wasting time prepping that car for flat black. that's a lot of work! paint it nice or leave the body alone. get it running (318 or 360), get your stance dialed in, pick your wheel and tire combo and make it comfortable to drive...

Yep it was called the suburban ! My problem has been building toys that I could do nothing with, once done ! HA/GR dragster and our Lakester for bonneville , and the drag cars !!!! I want something I can jump in and drive to the races or even let the ol' lady drive it to the grocery !!!! A cruiser just to cruise !!!!!! I know alot of guys are gonna give me H_ll over putting a Chevy motor in it , but I know how to fix them !!! Sorry guys !! Unless I could find a old slant 6, I'm even thinking about building a all new 2"x3" tube chassis for it , so I can update the front and rear end . I was not going to start the build until spring ,but damm I don't like sitting around !!!!!!

  13. We had one for a while someone had cut the front off and made into a trailer -

Great idea, except the flat black. My buddy just finished this '50 Suburban. The lines on these cars are pretty great, I'd do it the favor of paint.

Neighbor of mine has a '51 Dodge Coronet that he swapped a Nova subframe into. Fit really nice and the right width. The rear mounted to the stock spring pads. You might want to look into it. It came our really well.

I agree here. (even though I drive one myself), the flatblack thing is getting old.:(

I'd do up the driveline & suspension like you mentioned so it's comfortably driveable, put some decient wheels on it, and have a ball driving it!!

(of course this is just my humble opinion...but I'm RIGHT!)

Check out PlyDo they have the disc brake conversion, and check out the P20(?) website, there you can find all kinds of suspension hop up tricks for that bad girl, then you won't have to build a whole new chassis, just a thought.

    Bitchin ride!

My wife has a 51 savoy 2 door wagon i built for her , she loves it its all stock and runs and drives great......ENJOY!!

  24. I have a nova front suspension under my 49 Plymouth, it is quite wide and I had to get fatman narrowed upper and lower "A" arms on it to get fender clearance. No problem after that, just a big expense for the arms. I believe the 51's and 52's are wider than 49 and 50.

    Ditto. I think it's super!

  26. Think maby Rod & Custom or someone did an article or two on a wagon like this. Maby a few years back? Found it stock and they tuned it up, new brakes and gradually brought it back to life as a real car. Thought this was a nice ride!
