I was talking last night with a few guy about White wall tires. I have some of the older nylon style tires now and I am wanting to move into a radial tire. What is the best radial that you can buy that can be cut to a real decent white wall? That is without paying for the "true" Coker or whatever radial white wall? I am sure that someone on this board has done the home work on this. Thanks to any of the replies ahead of time btw.
Sorry No answer for you but as a matter of courtesy, please post an introduction with pics of your projects, toys, first born and best of all your kid sister nekid. You'll get all the attention and answers you'd like.
Introduction? Hmmm, I live in Oklahoma and I have no available pics of my car at this time. But I can tell you it is a 54 Ford that I am trying to turn into a drivable Kustom with skirts wide whites and a tuck & roll interior. I think that is a pretty decent introduction isn't it?
there is a small handfull of people here who like to complain about people not posting " intros" . dont take it too seriously . as for the tire question , I have seen it doen with pepeboys tires and it worked pretty good . obviously they will never look as good as real bias-ply white walls , but hey if you are cheap or broke or both , it could be a good way to go . sounds like your car might fit right in . if you get a chance or have a friend with a digital camera , pictures would be cool . we all enjoy seeing the new iron on the road out there . regardless , welcome to the H.A.M.B. , I'm sure someone will have a better , or more detailed answer than mine , but seriously i think as long as the tire has a little whitewall of any size , it should work .
[ QUOTE ] What is the best radial that you can buy that can be cut to a real decent white wall? [/ QUOTE ] NOW WHY in hell would you want to endanger yourself and those riding with you by "cutting" the sidewall on a tire? If you want radial whitewalls...save your pennies and go buy them...don't shortcut yourself...or is it that the Ford is a trailer queen and never gets any hiway miles? BTW, the INTRO ****ed...is that the best you can do? I'd like a little more info so's I can "chat" with you intelligently (and no, I don't want a date)...just like to know if I'm chatting with a youngster or an old fart. R-

[/ QUOTE ] Ah, Hell. I didn't know that pics were a must. I don't even have a kid sister. Well, here's a projection of the current project. The cabs done and mounted,as is the clip. The section is complete, along with the new floorboards. the wheels are gone they were for mockup only. I haven't started on the bed yet. asillymick, sorry to steal your thunder, I'm just being an ***. Welcome. as for your question, there are a lot of other brands besides Coker, cost is compairable to to your average tire. Snag a Hot Rod Rag and look through the ads. Don't sell yourself short, get what you want to start with. You'll be happier in the long run. Of course that's just my opinion, like arm pits I got a couple and they usually stink. There is lots of good info here, between the opinions. '54 Ford, like those mid '50s Fords. I'd like to see it. Don't be shy, you'll fit in just fine. if it don't make ya dirty it aint yours
Been "buffing out" the 1" white walls to wides on my lowriders for years with no problems. It can be done, it is 100% safe if done right. It is a helluva lot cheaper then Coker, about $5 a tire to buff them out.
Well, I am not having any success on uploading my car picture, but if you are wanting more info I can say this. I am a systems ****yst at a Credit Union here in Oklahoma I have a son that is 4 and a wife that acts like she is 4(hehe) I think that I am part of a group that calls themselves the Ratty *******s. It is more of like a bunch of drinking buddies more than a club. My dog is dead and I like Guinness Stout. I am very mouthy and usually have no problem talking **** about stuff I know nothing about. That is a pretty fair amount of stuff about me. BTW if you join up with the Yahoo Group "Kustoms" my car is part of the photos group. If someone knows how I can upload it here give me a shout. I am not good with image files.
[ QUOTE ] Hell I think I got it on after all. [/ QUOTE ] Yep...you've just convinced me IT IS a Trailer Queen! Any type of whitewall will work then...even white latex! Hey P'n Beener, you using those cinder blox for running boards? R-
****, man...you come to the right place! I'm always happy to help out dudes who own 52-56 Fords and Mercs!! One of my very favorite body styles! Let's see if I can dig up some wide whites for ya and clean that ride up a little... <img src=http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid83/p173acb975d0e93c4c6f710d792423f16/fae2c107.jpg> There! Lookin' better every beer!!!
Hey Roger, you're feeling extra s***y today aren't you! One of our club members has a whitewall cutter, but we haven't tried it out yet. You have to be sure the tire you're going to cut has the white inside and not on the outside. You can tell because the "whitewall" is raised instead of set into the sidewall. Nice 54. My Dad has been looking high and low for one. He learned to drive in one just like yours. I have to hear about it everytime anyone even remotely mentions a 54 Ford.
[ QUOTE ] Hey P'n Beener, you using those cinder blox for running boards? R- [/ QUOTE ] Naw those are springs, I was gonna heat the originals, but you can get the same effect from blocks.

What's it got under the hood, or what do you want under there? if it don't make ya dirty it aint yours.
Local guy around here cuts sidewalls. He gets 50 a set. I asked him what type of tire would give me the best results and he told me " Cornell from Pepboys, the 4 for $99 kind". I bought 4 for 108 dollars out the door. Paid him 50 to do the sides, and 30 thousand miles later, they still have at least 1/2 tread. No problems at all. My car hasn't ever been on a trailer either. Some members have seen me plenty times in the fast lane on the interstate cooking about 75+ mph. Same lame gay *** car I've posted before:
[ QUOTE ] Hey Roger, you're feeling extra s***y today aren't you! [/ QUOTE ] Hey Chad... Yeah, feelin' like I'm thirty again (well, OK maybe forty!)!!! Things are going well this week...just got two more shirts to do...(one a national "landmark") the initial layout I've done is killer so far...the Caddy is coming along fine, there's still a few cruises to go to and the weather around here is near perfect...how's the layout on the Calendar coming? Do I get to proof it again? Anyway, my Dad had a '54 Ford (guess that's why I'm a Chevy nut)...that I've written a story about...I got to drive it a few times...he loved that car...never could figure out why!!! I also hated the '49 Merc he had but my buds loved to cruise around in it and when you're just 16, what difference does feelings about a certain car make? R-
Ok, here is a more recent photo of it. So far I have a Ford 302 with a AOD in it with the stock 4.11 Rear end Caddy hub caps Buick grill, pontiac trim, olds tail lights and Mexi Blanket seats. It have been a work in progress since about 2000 I think. but it is getting there.
Has anyone one on here got any idea why oh why early 50's fords are so damn ****in ugly, what the ****** hell were they thinking of when they produced such ****py looking cars.Gimmee a stude champion starlite coupe anyday.God almighty were they or were they not ugly or is it just me,the lines don't flow at all and as far as i can see it they all need a good haircut damn they llok like they were designed to carry s***enecss in anyway welcome to the group mate oh and p.s end of rant.............Mad marq
[ QUOTE ] he loved that car...never could figure out why!!! R- [/ QUOTE ] Ha ha, I feel the same way. I grew up learning that '59 Chevys, '36 Fords and '67 Chevelles were the greatest cars ever made, and I've pretty much adapted that view myself, although I'm much more flexible in what cars I like or not than Dad is these days. But the '54 attraction was not one I ever shared with him. Yeah, as soon as I get the credits finished, I'll send out pdfs again of all the pages with corrections. I'm waiting on 1 more name. Asillymick, I dig your two tone primer. Looks killer.
Hey SillyM...Now why didn't you post that one in the first place??? Looks like it's already got whites on it...worn out? Bias Plys? Don't recall you saying much about the tires on it up front other than you didn't want to pay Coker prices...I still maintain you should just go buy some GOOD ww radial and forget about cutting them...a smooth sidewall sure makes keeping them clean easier...try www.whitewallsplus.com They even list prices and GUARANTEE the whites will STAY white!!! Can't get much better than that. I have them on my Stude...best whitewalls I ever bought! The Ford looks much better now than on the trailer! Oh FWIW, since you answered most of my questions, welcome to the House of HAMB!!! R-
Wide 65 series BFG raised white letter tires. With late model cop Caprice springs and shock, heavy sway bars and severe lowering, it drives like a sports car. Got them cut for $10 per tire from the guy who we bought the tires from. BFG won't honor the warrenty, but the guy that sold and cut the tires will.

Well I am glad that some of you guys like my Ford, I can understand that it isn't for everyone but, hell... you ain't driving it so like I care what you think. Now the info on the tires was good. One thing though have you guys heard the skinny on the Coker tires having problems? (i.e. tread seperation?) I will try to get some better pictures of the car soon.
there are some old scholl lowrider guys at a muffler shop in downtown Anaheim that have been buffing (cutting) tires for 20 years. like everything modified if it is done right there is no danger...Welcome!

He hasn't run 'em for a couple of years for just that reason. But, I don't know if they have dealt with the problem. I'll call him tomorrow and find out what brand of tire he's running. Then I'll get back with you. By the way, I never said I didn't like your ride, but if it will make ya feel better... if it don't make ya dirty it aint yours
I had diamondback cl***ics on my 54 chevy, never had a problem, always stayed real white, handled great. $540 for 4.
I used to cut whitewalls for a living. Done right there is no safety issue. The only drawback is that most existing whitewalls cannot be enlarged all the way to the wheel. You may have a quarter inch black stripe between the wheel and the starting edge of the whitewall. Not much problem if you run wheel covers, but not too pretty on painted plain wheels.
Yep my Cokers seperated now there on my parts car ( they still hold air ) and I run Diamond Back Cl***ics.
