Technical New weather seal now can't get the trunk lid closed

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Babyboomerboy, Jul 7, 2024.

  1. I got the weather seal glued in my 1950 Ford and I knew it was going to be tight but I can't get the trunk lid to close and latch. Does anyone have any ideas that would help. Thanks

  2. Try adjusting the trunk latch or striker in such a way that the deck lid will latch even if the deck lid doesn't look fully closed. Leave it that way for a few days and allow the new w/strip to crush a little at a time to reach it's final fit. Readjust the latch a bit at a time until you can easily close the deck lid fully. New, fresh weatherstripping can take take a bit of time and coaxing before it achieves its final compressed thickness.

  3. Thanks ClayMart for the idea. After banging on it for a while I got it closed and latched. I'll leave it that way till tomorrow and then see if I can get it unlatched!

Most rubber from Dennis Carpenter is like that.
I put a large weight on my trunk lid to compress the rubber.

Sometimes getting the weatherstrip real warm with a heat gun prior to closing the lid, allows everything to "find it's own happy spot".

If you can shut it let it set out in the sun a couple weeks with the trunk shut that will probably help.
