Just joined up and am look for suggestion or someone who can help. I have a '37 Dodge rat rod truck I'm building and am thinking of chopping the top. Keep in mind I'm a big guy and want to still be able to fit in this thing when done. The cab is already channeled 4". I want to chop it any where from 2" to 4" or maybe even a slant chop to give it a wilder look. If anyone has an older truck like this (it's been mistake for a 39 - 40 Ford several times) and has chopped it, your input would be greatly appreciated. Here's a few pictures.
i dont mind, but alot of ppl here would apreciate and intro duction of yourself before you ask to many questions. just a little about your self. that being said nice truck, i choped it, took out some inches on each side of the bed, and shortend the wheel base a touch tim
I think you can get away with at least a 4 inch chop. My friend has a 35 ford chopped 4 inches, channeled about 5 or so inches. I am 6'1" and I fit in no probalem, I can stretch my legs. Depends on how big of a seat you want too?
What he's building... check Where he lives... check Pictures... check post says he's a big "guy" so pictures of breasts are thankfully omitted... check Welcome! What are the headlights off of?
Corvair steering box? Ain't seen that in a while. Sit in the truck in the position you'll be driving in. Mock up the seat in other words. Measure how far your head is from the headiner. Allow a bit for bumps and potholes. Imagine yourself in a 3 hour drive in that position. THEN decide about dropping the top and how much. Looks are important, but if it hurts to ride in it you'll sell it and the looks won't matter. I've got a buddy with a chopped A pickup that I love but I'd hate to drive it any farther than cruise night. I have to sit with my neck bent and my knees whack the bottom of the dash on potholes as my head is bouncing off the roof.
Hey whats up! I met you in Sherman at the KKOA show. I was the big guy with the guy(?) that had the chopped, chanelled deuce P/U behind Deuce's deuce in the your picture. (Sheez, that was mouthful!!)
Yes I do remember ya! Have to say that has been my favorite at the show sents the first time I saw it drive in! Hey the picture you posted, if you look over the top of the cars, the black 4x4 with blue and white flames in the back ground is mine (2002 show). Pulled the motor and sold the rest to start this project. Like the pictures the chop it's just what I'm looking to do to it. Thanks, I have a better idea now of how it will look. I wish I know what the headlight were off of. I was told Chrysler. But have also been told Packard, Cadallic, Buick. I think they look like old Cadillac headlights.
Nice rat rig! Where's the grill/radiator housing from? Have you run the tunnel ram'ed mill yet? What a sweet project ya got.
Grill on it now is 30/31 Ford. Have a new '64 1/2 to '66 Mustang radiator for it. I'm not happy with the grill shell ,to flat, I want a deuce shell for it, but I'm still toying with the idea of a tractor grill shell for it. Allis Chamler, Farmall or IH. Haven't run the motor with the ram on it yet, the motor going in is still setting on my front porch. That's just the mock up block and tranny that's in it.
Welcome.Nice truck. Go http://photo.starblvd.net/SKR8PN here, look around, and check out how much room you will have after a 6 in channel and NO chop.. I am a short shit(5ft6in) and I fit just right, when in the driving position. I also had to cut down the seat mounts a wee bit to get enough head room.
I found the pictures of your truck while brousing the pages of Star a few months ago. I really like the truck and can't want to see it finished (like any rod if ever "finished" ).
